Charity Golf Event

Since its inception in 1996, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu’s golf tournament has been a highlight of Kota Kinabalu’s golfing calendar. More than just a day of friendly competition, this tournament brings together business and golfing communities in support of meaningful, community-based initiatives.

Throughout the tournament, golfers are treated to energizing snacks and quenching beverages at the refreshments huts catered by the hotel’s mobile kitchen team. After an exhilarating day on the green, the event concludes with a post-tournament awards presentation, dinner, and charity auction at the hotel.

In line with our commitment to sustainability, we celebrate golfers’ achievements with eco-friendly trophies crafted from repurposed materials such as recycled glass and other sustainable elements—an initiative that reflects our dedication to environmental responsibility.

Beyond the tournament, our commitment to environmental conservation continues year-round. We actively participate in coral propagation projects, Hyatt’s Global Month of Service, and recycling and composting programs, all aimed at creating a healthier planet and inspiring positive change.

A big THANK YOU to our event partners, golfers, and hotel team members for making the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu Classic a success each year!

Charitable Impact Over the Years

Over the years, the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu Classic has grown into a meaningful tradition, bringing together golf enthusiasts, corporate partners, and the local community to drive positive change. Each edition of the tournament has supported impactful initiatives, from improving educational opportunities to enhancing healthcare access and environmental sustainability. With the generosity of our participants and sponsors, we have been able to make a lasting difference in the lives of many.  Our initiatives include:

  • Providing school supplies to underprivileged children
  • Distributing sustainable soap bars through the Soap for Hope 2023 program
  • Spreading holiday cheer by collecting over 140 gifts for children and vulnerable residents through the Christmas Wishing Well charity drive

Here’s a look at how our charity golf tournament has contributed to the community over the years:

2015

Hyatt Regency Kinabalu transformed its annual golf tournament into a charitable initiative, raising over MYR 50,000 for the Papar Middle School hostel project and various corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Funds were primarily generated through registration fees and a live auction.

2016

With 132 participants, the tournament raised more than MYR 50,000, supporting Project Smile Sabah, which funds surgeries for children with cleft palate deformities. Hyatt Regency Kinabalu and Borneo Golf Resort Berhad pledged MYR 20,000 to the Rotary Club Likas Bay, successfully funding four surgeries for children aged 3 to 11.

2018

The tournament raised MYR 58,000 supporting Operation Smile Sabah, Bird Guide Training, and other Hyatt Thrive programs. Funds also contributed to cleft palate surgeries and training programs for local bird guides in collaboration with Rotary Club Kota Kinabalu.

2019

PACOS Trust, an organization dedicated to supporting indigenous communities, became a beneficiary. Funds contributed to Sabah’s first glass recycling project, which upcycles waste into sustainable income-generating products for rural communities.

2023

After a COVID-19 hiatus, the tournament returned, attracting 122 players and 49 corporate partners. A total of MYR 46,900 was raised to support coral conservation efforts and selected non-profit organizations. Proceeds funded coral rehabilitation activities and encouraged youth participation in marine conservation.

2024

In partnership with One Ocean Empire, we actively support coral propagation, planting 100 baby corals to restore marine ecosystems, planting 20 fruit trees for climate resilience, sponsoring solar panels to provide renewable energy for the island community, and crafting wind chimes from seashells to blend tradition with sustainability.
