Catch a ferry from Pier 33 and take a guided tour of “The Rock.” America’s most infamous federal penitentiary once held notorious gangsters Al “Scarface” Capone and Mickey Cohen, and officials still boast that no prisoner ever escaped its walls. A visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived, and do not forget to take in the unrivalled view of San Francisco while you are there.

The recently opened Chase Center is home to the Golden State Warriors, in San Francisco’s Mission Neighborhood at 3rd St and 16th St – just 2 miles from our hotel. The state-of-the-art facility has a seating capacity of 18,064 and a multi-purpose area that includes a theater configuration with an entrance overlooking a newly built park. The arena also hosts concerts and other live events. Chase Center boasts a large variety of dining venues including Faction Brewing, Tocolicious and Sugar and Spun.

The trail is open to hikers, equestrians and bicyclists from 8:00am to dusk. There are no amenities on Sweeney Ridge. Pack a lunch, take plenty of water, wear good hiking shoes, take extra layers of clothing and carry a compass (in case fog rolls in). Be sure to pack out your trash. Plan on taking at least four hours to hike Sweeney Ridge.

Wander through ancient groves of coastal redwoods at the Muir Woods National Monument. These impressive trees are between 800 and 1200 years old ande used to dominate the west coast. Afterwards, head to Stinson Beach, only 9 miles further north. Its white sand and oceanfront make it one of the best swimming beaches and surfing spots in northern California.

The Japanese Garden, in San Mateo Central Park is one of the finest gardens in California. It was designed by landscape architect, Nagao Sakurai of the Imperial Palace of Tokyo, and features a granite pagoda, tea house, koi pond and bamboo grove. The Japanese Garden is beautiful throughout the year but be sure to visit in the late Winter and early Spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Sorry, no dogs are allowed in the Japanese Garden.

The park stands along the San Francisco Bay, a segment of which is named “McCovey Cove” in honor of the former Giants player Willie McCovey. The stadium seats 49,915 which includes 68 luxury suites, 5,200 club level seats and an additional 1,500 club seats behind home plate. Enjoy amazing views of the Bay from here, both night and day.

Visit this historic transit hub from 1898, boasting an iconic 245-foot clock tower. Do not forget to check out the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Continue driving south on Highway 1, passing Devil’s Slide Trail, and you will find Montara State Beach. This is a popular location for visitors to explore beach tide pools, fish or just relax. It offers convenient access to several beaches for swimming, surfing, kayaking, windsurfing and horseback riding. In addition, the historic Point Montara Lighthouse is located here, offering dramatic and breathtaking scenery of the California coast.

Located in the SFO International Terminal near our hotel, this museum helps you learn about the history of commercial air transport, the airline industry  and San Francisco International Airport, with a regional emphasis on the West Coast and Pacific region. The Aviation Museum and Library is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. It is closed on holidays and for special events.

Starting out in northern coastal San Mateo County, you’ll find the most well-loved and well-used beach in Pacifica. This beach of course is Linda Mar Beach, also known as Pacifica State Beach, is a popular beginner surfing spot and offers a recreation trail along the ocean, surfing and surf camps, restrooms and showers. Not only that but it is also very popular with dogs. The beach is open from 5:00 am to 10:30 pm during the summer months, making it the perfect place to hang out with the entire family.
