Museum District

The museum district in Maxvorstadt measures 66 hectares and is unique with over a dozen museums, exhibition halls, numerous galleries and six universities. A special eye-catcher is the Könisplatz around the Pinakotheken, probably the most famous museum in this area. Maximilianstrasse

Lenbachhaus

German painter Franz von Lenbach had this Italian Renaissance-style villa built in the 19th century overlooking the Königsplatz. Today the palazzo houses the art works of the Blauer Reiter: Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, August Macke, Paul Klee and Gabriele Münter. With the picturesque garden and the “Ella” restaurant housed in the impressive extension that was added in 2012, the Lenbachhaus belongs to the firm favourites of Munich's residents.

Zugspitze

At 2,962 metres (9,718 feet), the Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain. Catch a gondola directly next to the tropical blue Eibsee to comfortably cover 2,000 metres of height. The Panorama 2962 restaurant at the peak of the mountain gives way to gorgeous alpine views across four countries—a must-experience, especially on a clear day.

English Garden & Isar River

Another highlight with a bike is the English Garden. For over 225 years, people from Munich and well-travelled visitors have come here to enjoy a piece of Munich's attitude toward life. Worth seeing in the southern part are the beer garden at the Chinese tower, the round temple Monopterus with a view over the city and the Teahouse. Alte Utting

They say ahoy and welcome aboard when you arrive on this former excursion steamer, MS Utting. Built in 1950 and then becoming part of the Bavarian Sea Fleet, this traditional ship retired at the end of 2016 and became an art and cultural object that was moved from the water to the city. Today Alte Utting is located on a railway bridge and is a beer garden, winter garden, event location, venue and restaurant in one. A popular meeting place for young and old.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Pinakothek der Moderne

A must-see for design lovers: Opened in 2002 and designed by Stephan Braunfels, the Pinakothek der Moderne is a favourite for Munich's vernissage-goers. The building, with its minimalist facade, is home to four museums: the Collection of Modern Art, the Bavarian Graphic Collection, the Museum of Architecture and the Neue Sammlung. The Neue Sammlung was founded 100 years ago and is said to be the oldest design museum in the world. Today the museum houses one of the world’s most expansive design collections, with 80,000 exhibits ranging from industrial design and applied arts to graphic design.

Haus der Kunst

The museum, originally constructed by the Nazis, focusses on social topics and hosts political discussions. In recent years, it has hosted exhibitions by Ai Weiwei, Gilbert & George and Andreas Gursky. The building became famous for housing the legendary P1 nightclub and being located next to the Eisbachwelle, where Munich's surfers brave the water in summer and winter.

Oktoberfest | Wiesn

Oktoberfest, locally called “Wiesn,” takes place every year in autumn. From September 16 until October 3,  Munich is proud to host the world’s largest fair, which was established in 1810 as a wedding celebration for King Ludwig I and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Six million visitors come to Munich to experience this event brimming with local culture, and it’s always an exciting place to make memories that will last a lifetime.

The bar shares its name with the brand of a whole generation. Today the owner and inventor of the Swimming Pool Cocktail is the subject of books and films. But Schumann stayed Schumann. Even though his bar moved to the Hofgarten – a location much more royal than the Maximilianstrasse and the perfect place for the king of bar culture.
