Lindenhof Hill is situated in Zurich’s city center and offers a peaceful escape in the heart of the city. From its vantage point, you’re treated to breathtaking views over the historic Old Town and the Limmat River.

It was once a roman fort, serving as a customs post between Italy and Gaul. In the early middle ages, Lindenhof became the site of a Frankish roxyal residence.

One of the most enduring legends tied to the Lindenhof is the story of the Zurich women’s uprising: During a time of foreign invasion, when Zurich’s men were away fighting, the women dressed in armor and paraded through the city to intimidate the enemy, who then fled. This act of bravery is said to have taken place on or around the Lindenhof and is celebrated as a symbol of courage and cunning.

History & Heritage

The majestic Romanesque “Grossmünster”-Church, which rises above Zurich’s Old Town, is a symbol of the city’s medieval heritage and spiritual origins. With its iconic twin towers reaching into the sky, the Grossmünster has stood witness to defining chapters of Swiss history.

According to legend, Charlemagne was riding through the area when his horse suddenly knelt down on a spot where the graves of Saints Felix and Regula, Zurich’s patron saints, were believed to be.

Taking this as a divine sign, Charlemagne ordered a church to be built on that very site: the Grossmünster.
