Secret Garden

Currently on Display | Luisa Bohorquez

NYC-based florist Luisa Bohorquez masterfully transformed the 5th Avenue Gallery into an oasis of tranquility, inviting guests to pause and immerse themselves in her floral wonderland. Drawing inspiration from the storied "Flower District" nearby, Bohorquez infused her creation with a touch of nostalgia and tradition. Against a backdrop of pea-snap green and a carpet of lush foliage, guests may lose themselves in the serenity of the garden, while moss-laden accents on the ground climb the walls, leading the eye to a collection of flower-accented antique frames and mirrors that dance with reflections of the bustling Fifth Avenue outside.

Pop-Up Tattoo Studio

August – November 2023 | Macondo Brooklyn

Brooklyn-based collective, Macondo, partnered with Andaz 5^th Avenue to create a pop-up tattoo studio in the hotel’s street-level gallery space from August to November. Jon Gòmez, the studio’s founder, noted that “tattoo is one of the few art forms that is readily available to the public, unlike most ‘highbrow’ art which exists in spaces that feel, or are, inaccessible to a majority of people. This installation [aimed] to displace the traditional notion of what kinds of spaces tattoo inhabits and fold as many people, from as many backgrounds as possible, into this world.” Macondo welcomed guests and passers-by at Flash Tattoo Happy Hours, offering quick applications of pre-determined designs by its talented artists. Macondo also hosted classes (partly sponsored by the hotel) for emerging tattooists looking to refine their skill and style.

Passage

April – July 2023 | Field Studies Flora

Alex Crowder, an American florist and champion of local, sustainable agriculture, recognized the severe environmental harm and destructive cycle of waste caused by her industry. With rapid, episodic demand akin to fast fashion, the trade has succumbed to an unsustainable model. Ushering blooms from field to vase within three to five days exacts a heavy toll, begetting excessive pollutants, substantial water use, and heavy carbon. In Passage, Crowder adorned the facade with an evolving arrangement bearing testimony to her values, incorporating even the maligned Barberry, an “invasive species” undergoing eradication efforts by local land stewards. By stripping the thorny bark of the bush to expose its neon yellow glow underneath, Crowder demonstrates that beauty is a matter of perspective.

Once Upon Our Time

June 2022 – April 2023 | Edward Granger

Edward Granger’s intricate, geometric abstractions dance across the façade of the hotel. The flat-tinted colorful shapes that compose the tectonic pattern travel across the walls, leading the viewer inside and to the 5th Avenue-facing window. The Brooklyn-based artist arrays shapes across architecture to break with the formal structure of the canvas and induce playful movement. Inside, visitors can peer through the mural onto a fragmented view of the New York Public Library. Transparent multicolored shards of plexiglass hang overhead, echoing the geometries on the walls, and the pink neon rose appears to be the fractal’s final iteration. For Granger, Once Upon Our Time is “an homage to the city’s grid design, bold façades, flashing lights, rich cultural diversity, and queer communities.”

Sean Maze

Sean Maze is a multi-faceted muralist whose style is inspired by street art, pop art, and kitsch in particular, with which he explores abstract landscapes and dreamscapes in dialogue with the built environment. This style is represented here in his original piece, Bookends, created for Andaz 5th Avenue in 2023. Facilitated by 1DROP Walls, the mural ties in the hotel’s locale and notable neighbor and partner, the New York Public Library. Explore the vignettes of Maze’s portrayal of New York moments, both real and fictional.

Elevator Murals - Students of the New York High School for Art & Design

Each guest floor features a unique mural painted on the elevator banks. Students from New York City’s High School for Art and Design painted the story of New York through their unique observations. Guests will watch the city come alive as they visit each floor; experience the bright lights of Times Square or observe a young couple falling in love on the subway.

Lobby Murals - Carlos Capelán

Past the Front Desk are two 14-foot acrylic murals by Carlos Capelán displayed on opposite sides of the lounge. Both murals are vividly different, yet remarkably similar. The first mural represents the magnitude and explosiveness of New York. Its vermilion color glows like fire and lights up the lounge with the energy and force that is midtown Manhattan.

The second black and white mural introduces a softer side of the city. The figures in the painting are in constant communication with each other; representing how the New York Public Library presents us with a basis for knowledge that knows no boundaries, and a universal language and understanding that is New York City.

Upon entering the lobby guests are greeted by a white, eight-foot-high marble and resin sculpture. At first glance one may see a modernist sculpture, but the true meaning quickly unfolds as it is “read.” Nick Hornby’s sculpture anchoring the lounge of Andaz 5th Avenue incorporates a total of six silhouettes taken from the midtown locale of Andaz 5th Avenue.

Suites at Andaz 5^th Avenue feature unique scenes of the city, showcasing city landmarks and New York moments through each photographer’s lens. No photograph is duplicated, so every suite offers a new perspective.

Stop and Smell The Rose - Edward Granger

Once the focal point of Granger’s installation entitled “Once Upon Our Time,” the neon rose has become a permanent fixture of the hotel, illuminating the staircase leading to The Bar Downstairs and Kitchen.

Tsunami, Tiger In The Garden, Hundred Strokes Before I Go, Psychosis - Ari Behn

Ari Mikael Behn enjoyed his early childhood in Denmark and England before his family settled in the coastal town of Moss, Norway. As a young adult, Behn traveled through the United States, Asia, and Africa, where the cultural use of color inspired his artwork. In the years following his 2002 marriage to Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, he published four novels and created several television documentaries and dramatic plays for the theater. From 2013, Behn focused more on his visual art, painting in a neo-expressionist style. Though his work has been internationally exhibited, the four pieces at Andaz 5th Avenue are on public display for the first time.
