Sustainability
Alila Manggis achieved EarthCheck Platinum certification in 2023 for its environmental and social responsibilities, including adhering to a zero-waste policy.

Coral Conservation
Alila Manggis recognises the essential role coral reefs play, from supporting marine life to protecting the shoreline. Although coral reefs cover only two-tenths of 1% of the ocean floor, the complex tropical ecosystems rival the rainforests in terms of biodiversity. Based on the rapid assessments of Bali’s reefs conducted by Conservation International, the reefs around the Candidasa area are reefs of high conservation value. Alila Manggis and Zen Dive Bali run a few parallel projects in support of these reefs.

Underwater Garden
What started out as just a few table corals and concrete bells is now a thriving underwater garden home to juvenile fish stock. We visit the site weekly to maintain the garden and monitor coral growth, and we plant new corals every month. We also elevate nearby broken corals away from sediment on the bottom onto our tables. Corals planted on tables are slowly finding their way onto concrete bells, which are ideally shaped to create homes for fish and shrimp.

Ocean Cleanup
Alila Manggis invites guests to work alongside the local community in a monthly ‘Plastic-Free Oceans’ cleanup. Join us on a beach and underwater cleanup on the 28th of each month. With its abundant natural beauty, Bali provides an ideal setting for showing the impact of each degree of human influence. The session begins with an interactive presentation explaining how we contribute to the worldwide debris database with our cleanup, and the reasons and needs behind such an initiative. We educate people on corals, what they are and how they sustain life, as well as offer a chance to donate and buy new coral stock for our artificial reef.

The Greenbank
Alila Manggis is committed to helping the adjoining village of Buitan manage their waste for a litter-free future. In 2010, we worked with an environmental consultant to become more environmentally responsible with initiatives such as separating garbage in-house rather than through a third party and composting our green waste. Once we were able to manage our own garbage and waste (while still evolving to be perfect), we worked with the villagers of Buitan to develop the Greenbank program to help them dispose of their dry waste effectively and correctly for proper recycling or reuse.
