The area is ﬁlled with churches and palaces built during the Renaissance and baroque eras. Visiting the Galleria Borghese is an experience that should not be missed. The museum sits inside Rome’s Villa Borghese park. The 17th century gallery is home to the sublime sculpture collection that belonged to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who was the nephew of Pope Paul V. The gallery houses some of Rome’s best ancient sculptures and mosaics, alongside Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces by artists such as Raphael and Caravaggio. The centerpieces of the collection are however the gorgeous marble sculptures by Rome’s ultimate Baroque master, Gian Lorenzo Bernini: Apollo & Daphne; Aeneas and Anchises; The Rape of Persephone and David. - aka The Spanish Steps 15 min walk from The Tribune Hotel. Once the artistic quarter of the city, attracting English poets Keats and Shelley, German author Goethe, and ﬁlm director Federico Fellini (who lived on Via Margutta), the area around the Spanish Steps is a fabulous spot for high end shopping. Nearly all of Rome’s haute couture and seriously upscale shopping stretches out from the bottom of the Spanish Steps. Via Condotti is probably Rome’s most upmarket shopping street, where you’ll ﬁnd brands like Prada, Gucci, Bulgari, and the like. Via Borgognona is another street where both the rents and the merchandise are chic and ultra-luxe. Like its Via Condotti neighbor, Via Borgognona is a mecca for wealthy, well-dressed shoppers from around the world. It offers a relaxed window-browsing experience because it has pedestrian-only access, and storefronts have retained their baroque or neoclassical facades. Via Frattina is the third member of this trio of upscale streets. Here the concentration of shops is denser; chic boutiques for adults and kids rub shoulders with ready-to-wear fashions, high-class chains, and occasional tourist tat vendors. It’s usually thronged with shoppers who appreciate the lack of motor traffic. Other noteworthy shopping streets include Via delle Carrozze, Via della Croce and Via dei Due Macelli.

Piazza di Spagna

EXPLORA is the first non-profit and privately owned permanent museum entirely conceived for children, schools, and families. The Museum offers children an opportunity to play, experiment and learn in the field as well as occasions for socialization and education; it also promotes the development of children’s cognitive and emotional capacities. Explora is in the heart of Rome midway between Villa Borghese and Piazza del Popolo. Explora consists of the museum’s exhibit pavilion, a free-access green area which includes a well-equipped playground, a kitchen dedicated to food education workshops, a bookshop, a gift shop, a cafeteria, a restaurant and a parking area.

Federico Fellini (1920-1993) was a surrealist ﬁlm director known for his zany, visually striking, and sometimes grotesque interpretations of social and psychological dilemmas. Examples of his work include La Strada, 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, his ode to the debaucheries and insanities of Ancient Rome, Satyricon and La Dolce Vita whose title was adopted by an entire generation of fun-loving Italians as their mode of living. Cinema-loving guests of The Tribune Hotel can enjoy a slow-paced walking tour visiting the symbolic locations of the iconic director's life and career. Starting from Via Veneto, the setting for the extravagant and unique characters of the Dolce Vita, to Via Margutta and the house where Fellini lived until his passing together with wife and actress Giulietta Masina. At the end of the stroll, just like Federico did: enjoy a coffee at Bar Canova in Piazza del Popolo, his favorite hangout with jetsetter artists of the times. A famous quote by the genius director sums up his entire artistic belief: “Talking about dreams is like talking about ﬁlms, since cinema uses the language of dreams. Years can pass in a second, and you can hop from one place to another. It’s a language made of images. And in cinema, every object and every light has a symbolic meaning, like in dreams.”

La Dolce Vita - WALKING TOUR

25 min walk - Technically a sovereign state, Vatican City in practice sits within the city of Rome and is the place where popes have lived for 7 centuries. The Vatican Museums with their impressive collections of over 70,000 paintings and sculptures displayed in over 54 galleries; the Sistine Chapel masterpiece of Michelangelo, and the majestic St. Peter’s Basilica as the seat of Catholicism, all rank among the Eternal City’s most visited sights.

Bioparco is located within the Villa Borghese Gardens. From being an animal museum with no finality, Bioparco is now a place where the focus is on conservation of endangered species, education towards biodiversity protection and scientific research. Bioparco is home to about 1,200 animals of about 150 species including reptiles, mammals and birds. These are all animals that were born at the Bioparco or at other zoological facilities. For many years, in fact, the concept of Zoo has changed and animals are no longer purchased or taken from their natural habitat. Bioparco covers an area of 17 hectares in one of the most suggestive botanical settings in the city. The park has a rich tree collection with typical plants of the Mediterranean area. The use of plants today plays a fundamental role in zoos: in fact, in the design of new exhibits, an attempt is made to recreate the original habitat of the animal hosted, using plants that are similar to or native to its areas of origin.

20 min walk - Although no longer the heart of the city, this is where Rome began. No matter how many photos you’ve seen, the ﬁrst impression of the Flavian Amphitheater (the Colosseum’s original name) is amazement at the arena’s sheer enormity. Along with the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Imperial Fora, and the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum is a must see in Rome.

15 min walk - Walking onto the piazza where this monument sits will likely leave you speechless, marveling at one of ancient Rome’s greatest and still intact temples. Originally built in 27 B.C. by Marcus Agrippa, it was entirely reconstructed by Hadrian in the early 2nd century A.D. With perfect proportions, enormous columns out front, original marble ﬂoors and the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome (no beams or arches) with a 30-foot oculus opening, this remarkable building is to this day among the architectural wonders of the world.

Included in the Guinness World Records and opened in 1934, Cinema dei Piccoli, with its 63 seats, is the smallest cinema in the world. It is located within the Villa Borghese park and covers an area of only 71.52 square meters. In addition to regularly programmed ﬁlms for children in the afternoon hours, Cinema dei Piccoli offers an evening program with screenings in the original language version with subtitles. Imagine going to the movies in the center of the most beautiful park in Rome, with children in town.

Galleria Borghese: a masterpiece in every room

Nestled in the heart of Rome, Villa Borghese is not actually a villa but one of Europe’s most elegant parks. A leisurely walk reveals one of the largest green spaces of Rome commissioned at the beginning of the 1600s by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V.While strolling the beautifully manicured park, guests can follow the various construction phases of the Villa, starting from the 17th-century core and its fulcrum, the Casino Nobile, today home to the Galleria Borghese. Explore the large array of secret gardens, avenues, museums, fountains and perspective scenes in which art and nature integrate seamlessly. The Villa provides access to several outstanding museums within. Scipione Borghese, as a matter of fact, conceived the entire park as a museum: a place to exhibit not only his art collections, but also the botanical and fauna rarities he owned. The Villa underwent 18th and 19th century transformations which changed its look, updating it to the taste of the time: including the Lake Garden and a monumental new entrance. Finally, guests learn of the thorny issue that saw the Borghese family initially opposing the City of Rome and then the State, up to the resolution of the legal entanglement with the opening of Villa Borghese Park to the public in 1903. With landscaped vistas and manicured gardens, this heart-shaped greenbelt is crisscrossed by roads, but you can escape from the traffic and seek a shaded area under a tree to enjoy a picnic or simply relax in nature. On a sunny weekend, it’s a pleasure to stroll here and see Romans at play, riding bikes, lounging under umbrella pines, or inline skating. There are a few casual cafes and more upscale eateries. In the northeast of the park is a small zoo.

La Rinascente Via del Tritone

The walk begins on via Boncompagni, which, together with Via Ludovisi, is the only section of road that belonged to the 17th century Villa Ludovisi. Along via Boncompagni it’s still possible to admire a number of family mansions built between the late 1880s to the 1930s. All in an eclectic architectural style with an Art Nouveau inﬂuence, as architects of the time tried to satisfy the wants of the owners who wished to replicate Renaissance styles of the ancient great noble palaces. Along the walk guests pass in front of the gardens of the Villino Rattazzi, built by Giulio Podesti in 1899 for a family member of the famous statesman; to the Villino Pignatelli, designed by Giuseppe Mariani, that recalls Palazzo Rucellai in Florence; to the Villino Folchi which borders the Hotel Excelsior at street numbers 12-10 on via Boncompagni.
