Attending an event at Baird Center? Enjoy a convenient, climate-controlled walk between our hotel and the convention center via the indoor skywalk located on the hotel’s 2nd floor. Please note that skywalk access and operating hours are managed by Baird Center in coordination with the group hosting an event on any given day, so access may vary. While our team is happy to help answer questions, the hotel does not determine the skywalk’s operating schedule. For the most up-to-date schedule, please refer to attachment in the pre-arrival email that you’ll receive from our team.
Wings of Welcome is a winged inverted pyramid over the main staircase of our atrium lobby. The sculpture was designed and constructed in 1980 by Richard Lippold and is crafted of gold and clear anodized aluminum tubing, measuring 80’x30’x20’.
On October 14, 1912, Milwaukee played host to one of the most dramatic moments in American history. After dining at Hotel Gilpatrick (where Hyatt Regency now stands), President Theodore Roosevelt stepped outside to meet a cheering crowd. Suddenly, John Schrank raised a pistol and fired point-blank into Roosevelt’s chest.
The shot should have been fatal. Instead, the bullet smashed through a steel eyeglass case and a folded 50-page speech stuffed into Roosevelt’s coat. Wounded but unshaken, Roosevelt refused medical help and went on to deliver that speech at the Milwaukee Theatre (now known as Miller High Life Theatre), bleeding, for nearly an hour. “It takes more than that to kill a bull moose,” he thundered.
Roosevelt’s grit was matched by his taste for a good drink. His favorite cocktail was a mint julep, shared with his inner circle who were proudly called “The Mint Julep Cabinet.” Julep, our lobby lounge, is our toast to Roosevelt’s indomitable spirit: named for the drink that fueled a president, at the very place where history nearly changed forever.

Yes! Our on-site gift shop, Romadka Brothers Mercantile, carries forward the legacy of the 19th-century Romadka Brothers, who once operated a trunk and travel goods factory on this very site.
Long before Hyatt Regency Milwaukee graced this corner of downtown, inventive brothers - the Romadkas - were leaving their mark on the city. The Romadka Brothers Co. crafted sturdy trunks and travel bags that carried Midwesterners’ dreams across the country, making travel a grand adventure at a time when it was a true undertaking. By 1877, their gothic-style factory and offices stood on the very ground you now walk. The business employed 195 workers and produced 300 trunks per day plus traveling bags, the first to be made in the western United States. At one point, the Romadka Brothers Co. was the largest of its kind in the country, helping put Milwaukee on the map as a hub of craftmanship, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit.
In 1907, the site transformed with the construction of Hotel Gilpatrick, a luxurious Romanesque Revival establishment that would welcome travelers from across the country. The Gilpatrick was known for its elegance and modern conveniences, standing as a symbol of Milwaukee’s growing prominence. The hotel operated until 1932 and was demolished in 1941, but the legacy of the site, and the Romadka brothers’ pioneering spirit, remains.
Today, Romadka Brothers Mercantile carries forward the spirit of innovation, adventure, and reliability that the Romadka brothers instilled in every trunk and bag. Every item in our shop, from thoughtfully curated travel essentials to unique Milwaukee mementos, is inspired by the same dedication to quality and service that defined the Romadka brothers’ work. Just like the original trunks were built to endure countless journeys, our shop is here to support every traveler passing through Milwaukee.
