The name “Reisen” originates from Frederik Reiss, a Dutchman who ran a (mostly) legal coffeehouse in the 1750s. Over the centuries, this building also served as a storehouse, a drinking den and an epicenter for some of Europe’s most prominent poets.

Inside these walls, 18th-century Swedish songwriter and poet Carl Michael Bellman was reciting, “Drink out thy glass!” and, in the early 1900s, Swedish author Fritiof Nilsson Piraten was using room 705 and bottles of Château Margaux to find an exit to his writer’s block. In the 1970s and 1980s, Russian American Nobel Prize winner Joseph Brodsky locked himself in a corner room to write social commentary about the former Soviet Union.
