We visited here for a birthday celebration in January. 

The good:
The hotel, room and staff were amazing. The staff could not do enough for us and were so helpful and lovely. The hotel and rooms were beautiful and there was a special gift in the room for my husbands birthday. Food was enjoyable too. We had the tasting menu, all made with local produce which was fab. Breakfast was lovely too, lots of locally baked fresh sourdough and plenty of choice of foods.

The bad:
The spa is SO disappointing. Firstly there are not enough beds so some people had to just stand around without anywhere to put their stuff. Secondly it was hugely overcrowded. In the saunas and hot tubs you were literally touching legs with people. Not relaxing. Its a shame as there is tons of grounds, to build on. A steam room and 2 more saunas would easily be manageable and make the overcrowding situation better.

Lovely hotel and staff but spa disappointing

Stayed in a cottage over New Year with family. Overall impression was good, very clean & warm. Nice communal living/dining/kitchen area. Comfortable seating areas. 

However too many areas need improved to recommend.

- very very noisy heating system, so loud that the radiators woke us up frequently during the night
- no instructions for any appliances in the kitchen. Oven ok, although absolutely tiny. The dishwasher was frustrating, glitchy, couldn't seem to get it going and eventually when it did. It ran for 3 hours and was noisy when sleeping in room next door. 
- the bathrooms look lovely, very modern and clean. Good luck if you want to have a shower tho, hot water & water pressure are absolutely useless. The pressure or lack of it made it difficult to even wash your hair & it was a cold experience due to lack of pressure. The hot water lasts a very very minimal amount of time so sharing a cottage with family, who's getting a cold shower?! Shame cause they look lovely.
- no freezer, only a small fridge. Asked for ice, took 2 hours to arrive
- TV 🙄 travelling with kids over the winter break, we would have liked a movie night but not at this place! The initial channel selection is very poor and with only the channels no ability to see what's on or coming on. There was Chromecast but this didn't work at all in the living room or one bedroom. Managed once to get it on for kids in bedroom but when trying again later it wouldn't connect to our cottage. Frustrating when it's cold & dark and you just want to chill to a family movie! Why not just have the streaming services available for people to log in on their accounts! 

The staff are all really really lovely, very friendly and helpful. The main hotel with the fires, beautiful xmas tree are very welcoming. Lovely hotel grounds too.

But I was left disappointed with these issues in the cottages.

Could have been good but needs improvement

Great hotel with great staff and nice accommodation. Really enjopyed the whisky bar, spa and the food. Our room was in the old part and was lovely and clean.

We had the most amazing minimoon here with an upgraded room to the junior suite and amazing service. The ambience, spa and food were out of this world. Can't wait to come back for another special occasion!

Amazing minimoon stay 🤍💍

Located a little over an hour from Edinburgh, this castle hotel is one of a kind. Set on a sprawling property in the countryside, every detail is intentionally designed for the perfect combination of relaxation and recreation. My husband and I stayed for 4 nights and loved every minute. We stayed in the newly converted carriage house with a king sized bed and heated bathroom floors. It was very comfortable and a great size for the two of us. There are multiple dining options on the property and the food is excellent at each, especially during the Guest Chef Dinner we booked for our last evening. There are numerous activities as well and we booked clay pigeon shooting and archery, though I do think the pricing is a bit steep. My husband booked a golf lesson and we spent a morning enjoying the spa with a salt scrub treatment, sauna, hot tub, and heated outdoor pool. I must also highlight the talented whisky expert, Carrie Ann, who staffs the Whisky and Gin lounge. She is incredibly knowledgeable and a real asset to the hotel. Our week there was magical and I highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing retreat.

An Idyllic Scottish Retreat

The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the staff were also very good but my only let down was being asked to pay for some breakfast items off a menu when we had already paid a bed and breakfast rate.

A stay to remember at an absolutely fantastic hotel with staff to match.

I just love the spa at this hotel. Being able to swim outdoors in all weathers is really special. The indoor seating area in the spa is very warm and relaxing.

Swimming in the rain

We found our entire trip incredibly disappointing. To lost a few issues: staff at the spa/gym check in were incredibly rude; spa was clearly over occupancy as we were told “it’s standing room only” it gave vibes of a community pool not a spa hotel, our waitress at dinner was abrasive and despite having been asked the occasion lots of times prior to visiting this was never mentioned nor recognised.

Disappointing

A beautiful property and a welcoming staff. The spa is very unique with it's heated outdoor pool and saunas. We took lovely walks around the property and enjoyed an afternoon at the spa. The breakfasts are delightful.

Worth the Splurge

My husband and I stayed for two nights for my birthday and it was incredible. Staff were so lovely and attentive, the quality of the hotel was unreal. Felt so relaxed, the food was all incredible and the spa was very relaxing. Only negative was the 4 hour limit per day on the spa - it is understandable but we could have spent the entire day in the spa.
