Hotel itself is fine. Customer service is good. It's just surrounded by homeless people and the rooms suck. My room had mold growing behind the caulk and smelled like shampoo water that never drained properly.
Overpriced for What You Get We chose this property for its convenient location for a one-night stay while attending a concert. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of expectations, especially for the price. As a meeting planner and Hyatt member, I’m accustomed to being acknowledged as a loyal guest, but that wasn’t the case here. I even had to confirm that my Hyatt membership number was on file. The room itself was very basic, and several easily preventable issues made the stay less than comfortable. The refrigerator wasn’t working because it wasn’t even plugged in—something a simple room inspection should have caught before check-in. The room was stuffy and had an unpleasant smell, and the large gap beneath the door let so much hallway light into the room that it was difficult to sleep. For the price charged, I expected a much better experience, more attention to detail, and basic room amenities that actually worked. The location was convenient, but the value simply wasn’t there.
Our stay was terrible, we are cancelling our future reservations, and recommending that this hotel be avoided at all costs. We discovered what appeared to be cat food on the uncleaned floor in our room (see picture). The next morning, we showed the picture to the front desk person who apologized and said that someone from Maintenance would address the problem. When we got back to the room that night, the floors still weren't cleaned - the "cat food" was still there (see second picture). If that was your standard of care, then we can't be confident that the rest of the room was any better prepared. In addition, we had things taken from our room by staff. I had moved most of our luggage to the lobby but returned to the room to gather a few of the open gift bags we had prepared for friends we were visiting. I opened the door to find one of your staff attempting to leave our room with a hat that was in one of the bags. I took the hat from him, pointed out the lack of maintenance, and left. Once we arrived at our friends' houses, we discovered additional items missing from the gift bags. Finally, our room was paid for in advance. This morning, we received another bill for $34.02 for "Destination Fees' and taxes on those fees. What destination fees? Why wasn't that covered in the cost of the room? In addition, I just discovered that the $100 damage deposit has been taken from our account (rather than just reserved if needed). The only purpose of the deposit was for damages. I just discovered that the money was used for the Destination Fee, which was not authorized – it was only for damages. As a final insult, the change from the $100 ($65.98) was not returned – the Company kept the entire $100. In short, the rooms were not cleaned, we had items stolen by your staff (catching them in the act), and we had additional, unexpected expenses for this experience. Why would we (or anyone) come back? Simply unacceptable.
As a WOH globalist I stay at a lot of Hyatt properties throughout the year and unfortunately this was my worst experience this year. F&B specifically the breakfast offering at this hotel was a disappointment. The latte was served incorrectly, tasted poorly and the avocado toast looked unappetizing - the avocados used had black moldy spots and toast looked very dull and poorly presented. The hotel seemed deserted and there was a weed smell inside the corridors and even creeping into my room.
Fantastic experience at Unscripted. The facility and amenities were great and the staff were friendly, professional, and extremely helpful.
Picked it for the location and oddball name and was pleased with our experience! This long standing hotel in downtown is being kept up nicely while clearly showing age. Kinda like John Waters. Easy walks to a variety of good restaurants. Their own bar is small and all that's needed plus has the poolside bar so that's fun. Yes, a cute, little, open air pool on top! Seemingly designed for chilling in a social scene and definitely has 70s vibe - you'll see.
Beware. Restaurant/bar closed early despite information on the website to the contrary. My CC was also charged for sundries from the front desk that I did not authorize. Room was basic, dark as it was an interior room. I don’t necessarily need to visit again.
This hotel was very clean and decorated well. The staff were really friendly, offering suggestions of places to eat and just chit chatting in general. We also really liked the pool area, it had a lot of good seating and stayed open late.
Unscripted failed to meet my expectations for a Hyatt property. A foul and persistent odor in our room, mildew and dirty grout in the shower and not enough towels. Virtually zero ambiance in the coffee bar, and an extremely limited breakfast items, which happened to be frozen, and reheated. However, the hotel is in a good location, walking distance to good restaurants and entertainment venues. We will not choose unscripted for our next visit to Durham.
Gym flooring not professional grade, AC needed to be fixed on arrival but that was done quicky, be aware that you might book an internal room w/ no windows, parking costs $25
