What smallest room La Verda lacks in square metres it makes up for with chic, shady-green walls and an original cementine-tiled floor. Mezzanine suite La Granda wins hearts with its cosseted bedroom in the eaves and generous living area.

Top Table
Breakfast is served at a communal, polished-wood table. When it’s time for aperitivi, load your plate at the table, then find a pleasing perch in the lounge where you can graze and converse in comfort.
Dress code
Think dinner at a friend’s house: a collared shirt for Mr Smith – statement jewellery and a dress or rise-to-the-occasion top and trousers for Mrs Smith.
Hotel Restaurant
Sunken within the palazzo’s original stone walls, the dining room is where breakfast, evening aperitivo and market-sourced dinners are served. You can see through a hatch into the kitchen, where a breakfast of freshly baked bread and pastries, cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals is prepared. Bread, preserves, yogurt and ricotta are all homemade, and there are gluten-free and vegan options available, too.

There’s an honesty bar in the lounge, where you’ll find a selection of spirits and mixers.

Breakfast is served from 8am until 10.30am. Aperitivo is from 6pm; dinner is on every night except Monday.

Planes
Milan Malpensa is the nearest airport, a 40-minute drive away; Milan Linate airport is only 50 minutes away too (transfers are available for an additional cost).
Trains
Como San Giovanni station is only a kilometre from the palazzo, on the Milan to Zurich mainline. There are also transfers available from the station (for an additional cost).
Automobiles
The palazzo’s in a limited traffic zone, but it’s fine to drive up to unload and load your luggage. The hotel can give you directions to where to park nearby. Como’s medieval lanes are interestingly narrow, making airport transfers and getting around the lakeside towns by boat much more appealing.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
Como town is at the south-westernmost point of Lake Como. There are plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants to discover in Como itself, or explore further afield afloat, with a boat trip to admire its waterfront mansions (hello, Casa Clooney) and dine at its lake-edge ristoranti.
You may recognise Villa del Balbianello from its cameo role in Bond movie Casino Royale: stroll the gardens, soak up the lake views, or take a guided tour. Ask the hotel to book a boat trip to Bellagio, Menaggio or Varenna. For views over the lake with an amazing Alpine backdrop, take the funicular from Brunate up to the Pissarottino Fountain. You can’t help but notice the decorative domes of Como Cathedral, a mesmerising melange of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Go for the stained glass and intricate masonry, stay for the vaulted ceilings and glut of Renaissance paintings.
