Roho ya Selous
Easy-breezy camp classic
Lakeside peninsular perch
High paw- and claw-count comes complemented with low footfall at Roho ya Selous — an Asilia Africa tented camp in serene south Tanzania. Your setting alongside Nyerere National Park’s Lake Nzerakera means days are filled with game drives, seasonal walking safaris or adventures by boat. Catch-and-release fishing and birding make for equally popular pastimes during greener months. And back at base, a pool, sunset-primed lounge and farm-to-fork dining ensure that camp comforts are kept well on track.
Once you’ve booked your safari stays, the Asilia team will be in touch within 48 hours, on business days, to help arrange travel between camps, which may include charter or private small-plane flights and/or overland transfers.

Our Favourite Rooms
Raised, tented suites at Roho ya Selous are set for immersed-in-nature living — their canopied beds enjoy the pick of verdant vistas, there’s a shower alfresco, and mesh wall panels keep your leafy surroundings in view. This Nyerere stay also has one tented suite for families, incorporating a second bedroom that sleeps up to three children with bunkbeds for little Smiths up to 12 years and a single bed suitable for an older teen, as well as a second bathroom.
Poolside
Refreshment levels get a top-up at the camp’s curvaceous pool — not just with cooling dips to counter the humidity, but also thanks to attentive staff, ready to dish drinks to shaded loungers on the paved deck.
Packing Tips
Swimwear for laps of the pool; deck shoes for boat safaris, and binoculars to train on everything from birds to wild dogs to basking crocs.

Food & Drink
Top Table
Dining at the lodge is arranged communally, although individual tables can be set up at your preferred spot around camp on request; we like the look of dinner for two by lantern light beside the pool.

Hotel Restaurant
Expect season-led dining that's proudly low on food miles. A commitment to sustainability and a celebration of local, indigenous ingredients underpin Asilia Africa’s approach to cuisine across all camps.
At Roho ya Selous, breakfast might be fresh fruits, yoghurt, muesli, freshly squeezed juices, baked pastries, breakfast sandwiches and wraps, with the option to enjoy hot dishes à la carte. For morning game drives, a packed breakfast will be provided.
Across all Asilia Africa camps, the menu changes by the day; at each meal, there’ll be a choice of starters, mains, sides and desserts, with vegetarians as well served as meat eaters. Lunch on Wednesdays and dinner on Sundays are a distinctly Swahili affair, spotlighting local culinary traditions. If you have food preferences or dietary requirements, the camp’s kitchen team will be happy to adapt dishes to suit.
Hotel Bar
The bandstand-like lounge is a convivial spot where you can mingle with other guests or kick back for drinks-accompanied downtime as you wish. Sunset bathes the space in an orange glow that's well timed for aperitifs. You can also order sips poolside or to enjoy from the privacy of your tented suite.
Last Orders
Rather than working to scheduled hours, meals fit around your plans and staff are happy to flex to meet your wishes.
Room Service
Available 24 hours; you can order drinks and snacks to your suite.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
Nyerere National Park in tranquil southern Tanzania is a riverine landscape of marshes, forest and even hot springs, and what you do from your base at Roho ya Selous will be decided by the water levels. Birdwatching is starred during the wetter, greener months from November to March: this is also when boat safaris have the greatest reach, and catch-and-release fishing is in full swing. As the water table lowers from July to October, wildlife congregates around its remaining pools — a boon for game drives and walking safaris.
Here’s how to turn your time at Roho ya Selous into a fuller exploration of Tanzania’s tranquil side among the diverse landscapes of the country’s south. After three nights in Nyerere National Park, head west to the riverine patchwork of forest, savannah and marshlands that is Ruaha National Park, for three nights at upscale Asilia stay, Jabali Ridge; this will give you time for seasonal walking safaris and after-dark excursions, when available, on top of stellar year-round game drives.
