At the Hotel

Our Favourite Rooms
With four high-spec suites — each a timbered triumph of modernity, tactile layering and mountain-backdropped outdoor space — to choose between them is surely hair-splitting. It’s worth noting, however, that the top-floor suites don’t adhere to the traditional notion of having a separate bedroom and living space, but do earn bonus romance points for their in-the-eaves setting. Let the differing bathroom set-ups be your compass, leaving you the enviable dilemma of whether to choose a private sauna or statement tub.
Poolside
Lake Bohinj is your go-to for cooling dips, or make time for a plunge in the adults-only outdoor whirlpool at Hotel Bohinj.
Spa
Beyond your in-suite sauna or bath tub, there’s no specific wellness at Vila Muhr. But you’ll have access to next door’s adults-only spa at Hotel Bohinj (included in the room rate), where you’ll find Finnish and Turkish saunas, a relaxation lounge with views down to the lake, a garden-facing terrace and spa pool, and two treatment rooms for facial or body therapies (you’ll need to book ahead). The concierge at Vila Muhr can arrange private yoga classes, too.
Packing Tips
Whether you dress with the full feather-toting lodenhut is your decision, but bringing an appetite for active days in the great outdoors will serve you well.
Also
Vila Muhr’s story begins with hunting (King Alexander of Yugoslavia hunted from here in the 1920s). The hotel’s insignia — a bear-flanked shield — hails from the original owner, Adolf Muhr. Thankfully, things have now turned a little less grizzly [sic].

Hotel Restaurant
A cosily lit, timbered dining room, draped with faux furs and decorated with wall-mounted antlers, sets the rustic scene for a celebration of Alpine cuisine at Muhr — the hotel’s soon-to-open fine-dining restaurant. Chef Davor Arnautović will oversee seasonal plates that showcase regional produce, presented with contemporary attention to detail. For breakfast, there’s an impressive choice of dishes cooked to order, as well as a buffet of healthier, lighter options and baked goods. Talking of which, afternoon tea next door at Hotel Bohinj is an elegant affair of dainty cakes and slow-steeped, loose-leaf brews.
Hotel Bar
There's no dedicated bar at Vila Muhr, but apéritifs and slow-sipped glasses of wine are only a walk away at Hotel Bohinj.
Last Orders
Breakfast is served from 7am until 11am; afternoon tea at Hotel Bohinj is from 3pm until 5pm, and dinner is served from 6pm, with last orders at 10pm.

Planes
Ljubljana is the nearest international airport (Austria’s regional hub, Klagenfurt is equi-distant), around an hour’s drive from the hotel; or you could fly into Trieste, Italy, which is two hours and 15 minutes from Vila Muhr by road. The hotel can arrange private transfers on request for between €100 and €250 each-way, depending on the car size and distance.
Trains
The nearest railway station is Bohinjska Bistrica, a 10-minute drive from the hotel; private transfers can be arranged from €20 each way.
Automobiles
There’s free valet parking at Vila Muhr, and the on-site carpark has electric-vehicle charging stations.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
Vila Muhr’s setting in Ribčev Laz immerses you in the nature of this Alpine corner of western Slovenia — with Mount Triglav and its surrounding National Park reflected in the hotel’s local Lake Bohinj. The concierge can arrange alfresco yoga sessions or a meditative Serenity Experience; ask them to arrange a guided historical walking tour or more active hike into the National Park. At Muhr restaurant, occasional wine and dine evenings provide expert-led insights into the region’s larder. Next door, Hotel Bohinj runs a calendar of events in the grounds: wine tasting around the outdoor fire pit in summer; weekly live music, and a Sunday farmers’ market showcasing local producers. For outdoorsy types, you can canoe or take a boat tour of the lake; try stand-up paddleboarding, or kayak the rapids of the Sava Bohinjka river. And in winter, a small ski area at Vogel in Gorenjska caters to skiers and snowboarders.
