Bluebird Ocean Point Inn

Rigged for comfort

Shores of East Boothbay

Standing shipshape along East Boothbay’s rugged shoreline, Bluebird Ocean Point Inn puts Mid-coast Maine’s on- and off-shore delights within plain sailing distance. Pine forests and rolling hills back the New England-inspired cottages, rooms and suites, each decked out in nautical striped fabrics and exposed wood. It’s the all-encompassing Atlantic views from the porches, outdoor pool and restaurant which are the hotel’s true siren call, though.

Our Favourite Rooms

It’s worth splashing out on a suite with its own ocean-facing porch to get the full Mid-coast Maine experience. The Oceanpoint Two-Bedroom Suite gazes out across Linekin Bay, and the glittering blue views from the Seaward Oceanfront Two-Bedroom Cottage take in picturesque Card Cove.

Poolside

There’s an outdoor, heated saltwater pool tucked between the Burnham and Barnes buildings, flanked by day-beds and lawn chairs for oceanside lounging.

Packing Tips

A wetsuit isn’t needed unless you’re chasing swells, but a good windbreaker and some waterproofs will stand you in good stead (as will the hotel’s boutique, which is kitted out with cozy knitwear, seaglass trinkets, gardening tools and local wine labels).

Also

Stock up on snacks from the Eastbooth General Store to make the most of your in-room kitchenette.

Children

All ages are welcome, with pack-and-plays and s’more-toasting kits available on request. Families can spread out in the two-bedroom suites and cottage, which all sleep up to six.

Top Table

Every table overlooks Card Cove’s crashing waves, it’s just a question of how close to the water you can sit.

Dress Code

The more you look like you’ve just stepped off a boat, the better. Go overboard with nautical stripes, fisherman knits and ribbed roll-necks.

Food and Drinks

Hotel Restaurant

The freezing Atlantic waters surrounding the hotel give Maine seafood its sweet edge, and you can expect a fish-focused menu at Ocean Point Kitchen. Sea-fresh dishes such as local rope-grown mussels, New England clam chowder and lobster rolls are served right on the waterfront, with vintage artworks on the ceilings and the blue expanse at eye-level.

Hotel Bar

Ocean Point Kitchen’s bar is a perfectly positioned watering hole with local ales on tap, thoughtfully selected wines (especially when paired with seafood), and classic cocktails on the menu. Ask for the Donovan, a sailor-strong, rum-based tipple named after the friendly mixologist who’s been helming the bar for years.

Last Orders

Breakfast is from 7.30am to 10am, and dinner from 4pm to 9pm. The bar pours from 3pm to 10pm.

Planes

Portland International Jetport is around 90 minutes by car from the hotel, and is well-connected to major US hubs such as New York and Chicago.

Automobiles

There’s free parking and electric-vehicle charging stations at the hotel; once you’re in Boothbay though, bicycles and boats are the best ways to get around.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Bluebird Ocean Point Inn’s on-the-water setting encourages wet (and often wild) ways to spend your stay. Rent a kayak and paddle over to Burnt Island Lighthouse (only accessible from the water), or make your heading for Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, home to a native butterfly house, bee exhibit, meditation garden, and swathes of woodland across 300 acres of the nature-protecting site. Take the three-mile Shoreland Trail for the chance to spot otters, red squirrels and all manner of birds among the trees, which ends at a postcard-perfect dock overlooking Back River. In Boothbay Harbor, Schooner Eastwind and Applejack (the town’s oldest windjammer) depart on daily sailing trips and sunset cruises along the Maine coastline, and Mainetain Charters skippers fishing trips for families through to experienced anglers. Cap’n Fish’s Cruises runs educational lobster tours and sea-faris, where you’ll need to keep your eyes on the waves for whales, dolphins, seals and puffins.
