Set in the Peloponnese hills, Monolithoi’s two sleek stone villas make quite the duo. The indoor-outdoor casas each flaunt three pool-facing bedrooms, view-framing picture windows and polished, coastal interiors (though we imagine most of your time will be spent alfresco). A local, homemade breakfast is served chez vous each morning, and Matina and her team are on-hand to arrange outings and transfers. And if one villa isn’t enough, you can book both — which connect via the organic garden — for the coolest double act.

Villa Two has step-free access and both villas have bedrooms on the ground floor, but unfortunately these rural retreats are not suitable for wheelchair users.

Our Favourite Rooms

Monolithoi’s two villas have given local materials and heritage a contemporary makeover: the clean-lined residences are a modern take on the region’s stone tower houses. The indoors and outdoors seamlessly blend thanks to vast picture windows, floor-to-ceiling glass doors and bedrooms that open onto the poolside terrace. Villa One is slightly more spacious, but Villa Two has a second, breeze-tickled terrace that overlooks the pool and gardens. Big family clans and coteries of friends can book both villas together to create one super-villa, connected by a door in the garden.

Poolside

Each villa has its own pool, which overlooks the distant sapphire sea and nearby terracotta-hued villages. You’ll find sunloungers dotting the terrace; Villa Two also has a separate day-bed area for any lunch-induced siestas. The two ground-floor bedrooms in each villa also open up to the pool, which means you’ll have easy access for any day-starting dips if you bag one of these rooms. The pool can be heated in certain months for an additional charge.

Packing Tips

Stunning scenery wraps the villas, so ditch the screens in favour of more wholesome pursuits: poolside card games, sketches of the sea, or that book you’ve always meant to read but haven’t gotten around to (yet).

Staff can arrange in-villa yoga classes and spa treatments; just let them know in advance if you’d like to book in a wellness session.

Welcome. Each villa has three bedrooms and a sofa-bed in the living room, sleeping up to seven guests in total. Baby cots and high chairs can be provided on request; babysitting can be booked with advance notice.

Hotel Restaurant

The villas are kitted out with fully equipped kitchens — an induction hob, oven, fridge-freezer and shiny worktops are your tools for cheffing up market-sourced fish and olive oil-doused salads for poolside meals (and at ease, KPs, there’s a dishwasher, too). However, you can put your feet up for breakfast, which is included with your stay: your hosts will prepare and deliver a fresh, locally inspired feast each morning, with made-to-order eggs, homemade treats and Matina’s marmalade. Your hosts can also stock your fridge ahead of your arrival and pick up any groceries for you during your stay.

Hotel Bar

There’s no bar on-site but you’re welcome to stock your fridge as you choose, and there’s a supermarket a 10-minute drive from the villas.

Planes

Kalamata International Airport is under 90 minutes’ drive from the villas; staff can arrange one-way transfers for up to three guests from €169 (from €235, for up to eight).

Automobiles

You’ll want a set of wheels to tour local villages and seaside towns, plus to pick-up any produce you might fancy at home. Your nearest supermarket is a 10-minute drive, or staff can pre-stock your fridge with your favourites on request and for an extra charge. There’s free parking outside of the villas.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Settling into a slower pace comes easy in the Continent’s southerly stretches, particularly so at peaceful Monolithoi. Snoozes by the pool and long lunches will rank high on your daily agenda — if you even have one — as might trips to seaside hotspots such as Stoupa beach or fishing village Agios Nikolaos. Get a taste for local life with a pootle around hilltop villages Platsa and Pigi, which has views of hiking-trail-crossed Taygetos Mountain; marvel at stalactite-strewn Caves of Diros, or soak up the sunset from Cape Tainaron Lighthouse. Matina and her team from Monolithoi are happy to arrange tours and transfers by boat or helicopter, as well as at-home massages and alfresco yoga; just let them know ahead of your arrival if you feel like booking anything in.
