The Penny Bun
Grub of the green
Dales’ doorstep
Contemporary coaching inn the Penny Bun is cooking up something special in this arcadian corner of England’s Yorkshire Dales. With just five rooms, service is affable and personalised with comforting touches: batches of homemade flapjacks greet your arrival, and hand-picked flowers colour eco-conscious interiors. But downstairs is where you’ll find this boutique’s magnum opus: a back-to-the-land pub and restaurant that showcases finessed Yorkshire fare.

Our Favourite Rooms
There might not be many to pick from, but each of the Penny Bun’s five contemporary rooms are warmed with their own personalised, homespun touches from local makers. The inn’s original beamed ceilings, unearthed during restoration, are at their most striking in the Large Bedroom 1. Plus, there’s a freestanding tub at the base of the king-size bed, for romantic rendezvous.
Packing Tips
You’ll be glad to have a water backpack during days yomping in the Dales.
Also
The hotel’s surrounding conservation project, Denton Reserve, is still in the works, but its 2,500 acres should be ready for your exploring by early 2025.

Hotel Restaurant
Food is where this boutique bolthole thrives, and with an ever-changing menu of seasonal classics, it’s easy to see why. Dishes put a modern twist on British comfort food (the golden-brown chicken and leek pie is a soul-warming favourite) and are cooked with hand-foraged vegetables and fresh produce from West Yorkshire farmers. And once the Denton Reserve is up and running, chefs are hopeful that every ingredient the kitchen cooks with will come straight from the Penny Bun’s immediate surroundings.
Breakfast is your best introduction to the hotel’s reserve-rooted recipes: the Continental spread is a bounty of fresh bread and pastries, Yorkshire butter, seasonal fruit compote and locally roasted ham, but save room for one of the included hot options — we're eyeing the house full English or smashed broad beans on toast with fermented garden chilli.
Hotel Bar
The Penny Bun’s pub is primed for snug evenings, with calming clay tones and a lengthy list of Yorkshire-brewed pints. If you’d rather grab yourself a crisp glass of wine, there are plenty of vintage bottles to pick from and classic light bites to soak up whatever you decide to sip.
Last Orders
Breakfast is available Wednesday to Sunday, from 8.30am to 9.30am. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner between noon and 8pm, Wednesday to Saturday; on Sundays, last seating is at 4.30pm.
Room Service
In-room meals are available during the restaurant’s opening hours.
Planes
The closest international airport is in Leeds, a 20-minute drive away from the hotel.
Trains
Ben Rhydding is the hotel’s nearest train station, where direct trains can take you to Leeds in less than half an hour, with onward connections across the UK, including multiple services daily between Leeds and London’s Kings Cross.
Automobiles
The hotel’s village doesn’t have much by the way of shops, so you’ll need a set of wheels if you’re hoping to do anything more than walk the surrounding trails. Otley is a 20-minute drive away, and the larger town of Harrogate is a little under 30 minutes. And the hotel has free parking onsite.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
Around here, it’s all about exploring the Yorkshire Dales, and whether you decide to hike, bike or horse ride is up to you. Once you’ve landed on how you’d like to get around, pick from the abundance of trails that surround this small village. Staff are on hand with pathfinders, but we’d suggest heading towards Askwith and Ilkley Moor, or towards the River Wharfe (where wild swimming rewards the brave). The characterful towns of Ilkley, Otley and Harrogate are also within driving distance, each with their own charm, historic architecture, and independent boutiques; Harrogate is also home to the storied 19th-century Turkish Baths, which are a classic go-to option if you’re in need of a wellbeing boost.
