The Coonamessett
Lobster-red farmhouse
Coastal Cape escape
Angle for a stay at the Coonamessett, a coastal crashpad in fishing-hotspot Falmouth. Rustic-luxe rooms and pond-facing terraces are your bait; you’ll be hooked on modern New England fare at Eli’s Tavern and all things seafood at waterfront shacks. While fiancés tie the knot at this white-washed boutique, you can too: casting lines on the harbor or at one of Cape Cod’s pristine beaches. With its bikes to borrow and laidback locale, this halcyon escape is a real catch.

Our Favourite Rooms
Coastal cool permeates throughout the Coonamessett, especially so in the bedrooms. Interiors are inspired by the hotel’s farmhouse pedigree, weaving in whitewashed pickled floors, wooden four-poster beds and bespoke wall hangings. Sun-streaming picture windows and a cozy fireplace make the King room a year-round favorite; the egg-shaped bath tub in the Lark Suite is big enough for two, and the Queen Suites are styled in sultrier hues of navy and charcoal, with brushed brass and dark leather details.
Packing Tips
A sarong can double as a beach picnic blanket (bonus points if it’s stripy); an appetite for seafood and craft beers will also come in handy.
Also
Afternoon agendas tend to be marked by soporific reading sessions — followed by breeze-kissed kips — on the sofa-lined porch or in one of the lawn’s hammocks.
Children
Welcome. An extra bed can be added to Queen Suites and Village King Suites for $50 a night. King Suites, Two-Bedroom King Suites, Double Queen Suites and the Lark Suite all accommodate up to four people.

Hotel Restaurant
Eli’s Tavern takes cues from the hotel’s farmhouse heritage, with vaulted beamed ceilings, wooden furnishings and duck-egg-blue details. Traditional New England fare gets a modern makeover, and indulgent stand-outs include the generously stacked cheeseburger and moreish spinach-artichoke dip. Cape Cod’s community spirit prevails at Eli’s, most palpably at weekly events, where nights of Jamaican cooking or local oysters are filled with the hum of neighborly nattering, regardless of where you’re from.
Hotel Bar
Eli’s Tavern pays homage to one of the den’s regulars from back in the day, Eli, who would buy two drinks — one for himself, the second for anyone who might need ‘one more than they can pony up for’. This sense of hospitality still flows freely at the inn, and you too can channel Eli’s generosity by paying forward a pint or a cocktail, which the bartenders dole out to lucky patrons (so keep your fingers crossed).
Last Orders
A light Continental breakfast is served daily in the lounge from 7.30am–10.30am. Eli’s Tavern is open 11.30am–8pm, Monday to Wednesday; 11.30am–9pm, Thursday to Saturday; and 11am–8pm, on Sundays.
Planes
Boston Logan International Airport and Rhode Island TF Green International Airport are each a 90-minute drive from the hotel; staff can arrange transfers on request.
Automobiles
You’ll want a set of wheels to reach sandy stretches and quaint towns in more distant parts of Cape Cod, plus there’s free outdoor parking at the Coonamessett.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
You’ll get your fresh-air fix at the Coonamessett, which is positioned between the pond-dotted Goodwill Park and Falmouth Harbor in Cape Cod. Sandy bays line this coastal outpost and favorites include family-friendly Chapoquoit Beach and Falmouth Heights Beach for salty swims, and Wood Neck Beach for long walks. Cast your line at Old Silver Beach, or venture out to sea on a fishing charter. Hike up to the Knob or to Nobska Lighthouse for golden-hour-washed views, or borrow one of the hotel’s bikes and pootle along the Shining Sea Bikeway, which takes you past marshes and cranberry bogs.
For more cosmopolitan pursuits, mooch in boutiques and bakeries along Falmouth’s Main Street, or take in the town’s history at Falmouth Museums on the Green. The old-world charm of Martha’s Vineyard is within daytripping distance: hop on a ferry from Woods Hole, which will drop you in quaint Oaks Bluff within the hour.
