Rock-starring South Dakota wilds

Embers is under a large canopy tent at the heart of the camp. Lanterns and surrounding fire pits keep it cozy in the evening, when dishes range from charcuterie boards and steak tacos to pan-roasted trout and bacon- and cheddar-topped burgers. In the morning, choose from hearty breakfast sandwiches, granola bowls, and other American favorites, accompanied by barista-style coffee.  For lunches out in the hills, grab ’n’ go bites are available to buy.

Hotel Bar

Quench your desert thirst with a locally brewed craft beer, cocktail made with local spirits or glass of crisp rosé. The bar has a good range of soft drinks, too, including hot chocolate, prickly pear lemonade, unlimited tea or coffee – and even espresso.

Room Service

The camp has a strict no food in tents policy.

Planes

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

A range of on-site programming – from stargazing to crafts to live acoustic music – is included with your stay at Under Canvas Mount Rushmore. And gathering around the fire pit to swap stories of the day’s adventures (and to toast marshmallows, of course) is each day’s natural footnote. Stretch out weary muscles at a morning yoga class or flow on your own with a mat that you can borrow in the privacy of your own tent.

There are hiking trails and climbing routes to spare in the Black Hills and Custer State Park, so grab some snacks and head out for a day of exploring. The young (and young-at-heart) will love flying through the treetops on a ropes course and ziplining excursion. If you prefer your activities at ground level, ATV tours, guided treks and horseback riding can be arranged on request. There’s also kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the nearby river. And the striking rock formations of Badlands National Park are just over an hour’s drive away.

Mount Rushmore and its four 60-foot-high faces are worth the visit. And if your sights are set on something even bigger, then try Crazy Horse Memorial – a monument to the famed Lakota Sioux warrior, carved into granite in the Black Hills over a period of 50 years.
