Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains

Safari-style serenity

Holy Smokies

Resting on Tennessee’s side of the range, Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains gives explorers an upscale basecamp from which to roam its lush landscapes. Canvas tents grace this verdant valley’s 182 acres, elevated with high-spec king-size beds, handcrafted furnishings and wood-burning fireplaces. Outside, 800 miles of hiking trails, plus wildflower meadows, rapids and rafting await. End the day with starlit singing and s’mores by the campfire, and it’s safe to say you’ll be sold on the Appalachian Mountains.

Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains is open 2 April to 30 November 2026.

On-Site Restaurant

At the Hotel

Nightly campfires, board games, Lululemon yoga mats and blocks to borrow, refillable aluminum water bottles, water refill stations, free hot drinks, guest experience coordinators and a small boutique. In rooms: USB battery packs, battery-powered fans, wood-fired stove, lanterns and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our Favourite Rooms

All tents have toasty wood-burning stoves and private sun-dosed terraces, meaning you’ll be in clover whatever the weather. But if you want to spy constellations from under the covers, bag one of the Stargazer tents which has a viewing window, perfectly positioned above the pillows.

Packing Tips

The camp falls into quiet time after 10pm, so be sure to bring a good book (and a pair of star-spotting binoculars) to cozy up with.

Also

There’s no WiFi here – and limited cell service – and you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing and fireside music and s’mores.

Children

Welcome; there’s no kids’ club or babysitting, but adjacent kids’ tents and a programme of family-friendly activities included with your stay make Under Canvas an all-ages favorite.

Outdoorsy threads and cozy layers for lingering alfresco are all you’ll need here.

Food and Drinks

Hotel Restaurant

Embers is a relaxed affair, kitted out with West Elm inspired furnishings (some alfresco, others inside the lobby tent) and open for breakfast and dinner. Dishes are locally inspired and occasionally differ with the seasons; but expect barista-style coffees, french toast and fresh berries in the morning, and laidback suppers featuring marinated meats and fresh fish, often paired with grilled vegetables and zesty homemade dips. If you’re heading to the trails for the day, there’ll be grab ’n’ go snacks available to buy.

Hotel Bar

Whether it’s craft cocktails you crave, locally brewed beers or a cooled glass of rosé, the lobby tent has it all.

Last Orders

Breakfast is available from 7am to 10am, and dinner is 5pm to 10pm.

Room Service

The camp has a strict no food in tents policy.

Planes

If you’re arriving from within the US, you can fly into the McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, which is just under an hour from camp by car. International flights tend to touch down in Nashville, which is three and a half hours away.

Automobiles

Many guests drive to the Smokies; you’ll also want a set of wheels for exploring this vast range – and it will make reaching nearby towns all the easier. There are rental booths at airports, and there’s free parking onsite.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Guest experience coordinators take the reins at Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains, and they’ll be more than happy to suggest local adventures and lesser known trails to satisfy your wishlist. Sitting right at the entrance to the Smokies means exploring its majestic mountains is high on the agenda: don your favorite Patagonias and head off on a guided hike along one of the many surrounding trails (some ending up at the Ramsey Cascades, others at Clingmans Dome), or take a driving tour and ogle all its hotspots in an afternoon. White-water rafting awaits along the Pigeon River’s rapids if you prefer your forays with a hit of adrenalin, and there are outdoor games, fireside guitar sessions and more included with your stay back at basecamp.

To either side of you, the towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are filled with family-owned boutiques and a distinct Southern charm. Odes to bluegrass, country and folk music are widespread in Tennessee, but when you’re just a 20-minute drive away, it’d be remiss not to mention Dollywood – a theme park dedicated to all things Dolly Parton.
