It’s all about the grape juice at Hotel Peralada, where you can sip, sup and savour dozens of wines made right here on the storied Peralada Estate. Sample complex terroirs rich with aromatic Alt Empordà bouquets of pine, rosemary and eucalyptus and named in honour of such trademark features of the estate as the ivy-clad 14th-century castle’s Carmelite cloisters (Gran Claustro) and the resident nesting storks (Cigonyes). Worn out after an arduous day’s tasting, hit up the Wine Spa for a revitalising vinotherapy treatment, or head to the castle’s fine-dining restaurant for dinner and – yup, you guessed it – more excellent wine.

More Details

For €35 you can have a buffet and à la carte breakfast in the farmhouse-style breakfast room with its stone arches, chandeliers and terrace overlooking the golf course. Expect a substantial spread of locally made cheeses, charcuterie, yoghurts and jams.

Our Favourite Rooms

Sweet, musky scents of jasmine drift on balmy breezes in Garden Suites, which come with substantial terraces and direct access to the hotel gardens and lake. The Garden Suites – Carmen, La Traviata, La Bohème, Otello, Turandot and Andrea Chénier – are all named after operas that have been performed at the annual summer Festival Perelada, hosted at the village's castle.

Poolside

Open 9am to 9pm, the saltwater pool in the hotel gardens is a little slice of Catalonian nirvana. Grab a lounger on the terrace, surrounded by mature olive trees (including one gnarly old customer that’s been around some 500 years), and gaze out dreamily across gently undulating landscapes to the distant Pyrenees.

Spa

Stone arches and views of the outdoor pool and beyond lend light and character to the Wine Spa’s pool, Jacuzzi and sauna area. Downstairs, eight treatment rooms offer vinotherapy experiences using grape-seed oils that range from quick facials to epic 80-minute full-body pummelings. All guests can book 60-minute session at the Wine Spa water area.

Packing Tips

Keen joggers (well, those keen enough to drag themselves from pool, spa or winery) will find much to enjoy in the relatively flat country lanes and lakeside paths that surround the hotel, so a pair of running shoes could come in handy. Visors are essential for sun-dazzled golfers who wish to avoid slicing every ball into the rough, although the pro shop has you covered should you forget yours.

The hotel’s 18-hole, par 71 golf course is 6,070 metres long and has a pitch-and-putt, pro shop and golf school. Golfers practising on the driving range provide the visual entertainment for gym bunnies working out on state-of-the-art treadmills inside.

Children

Little Smiths are welcome at Hotel Peralada, but the facilities here – spa, golf course and wine estate – are mainly geared towards grown-ups so please check with staff for access times for little Smiths.

Dress Code

Go golfer-chic in pastel lemons, powder blues and blushing pinks at the wine bar in the 19th, but vamp it up good and proper for Gothic evenings spent in shadows cast by the mediaeval castle restaurant’s flickering candelabra.

Hotel Restaurant

Gourmands will be in clover at Hotel Peralada, thanks to its four (count ‘em) dining options. L’Olivera’s walls are clad in local art and its Empordà-inspired menu, designed by multiple Michelin star recipient Paco Pérez, is no less refined. Here’s where to fill your boots (and belly) with contemporary Catalonian favourites like Iberian ham, prawn-stuffed calamari, and cuttlefish cooked with Figueres onion, all washed down, of course, with fine homegrown Peralada wines.

The 19th is a casual spot for informal bar-style wining and dining and the Garden Bar is the perfect place for healthy snacks and an aperitif after a dip in the pool.

Castell Peralada Restaurant inside 14th-century Peralada Castle (five minutes from the hotel) is anything but. Dripping with chandeliers and atmospheric candelabra, these fine-dining castle vaults sing with the scents of line-caught hake with saffron clams, Girona veal tenderloin, and honey, olive oil and orange-blossom ice-cream.

Hotel Bar

The Nou Celler 1923 Wine Bar provides an unforgettable oenogastronomic experience par excellence (try saying that after your third glass of Gran Claustro). Pair Girona cheeses and cured meats with fine Peralada wines beneath the stone arches of this former vault, or enjoy in the evening sunshine overlooking the verdant gardens and vineyards

Girona Airport is 38 miles from the hotel, around 50 minutes’ drive. It’s just under two hours from Barcelona Airport.

Trains

The closest train station is at Figueres, seven miles from the hotel. Figueres is served by trains from Barcelona and Girona.

Automobiles

Hotel Peralada’s rural location means you’re likely going to want your own set of wheels. Cruise the Costa Brava’s Balearic bluffs, explore the wild landscapes of the Empordà Aiguamolls Natural Park and draw lazy tapas lunches out until dinner in any one of several charming mediaeval towns around Girona. Heck, you could even take a sunny coastal spin down to Barcelona for the day if the mood takes you. There’s ample free parking at the hotel, to boot.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

That huge expanse of greenery behind Hotel Peralada is no mere pasture, but a Costa Brava golf course par excellence, where swingers can play 18 holes before retiring to the 19th bar to compare score sheets over a fruity Peralada cab sauv or crisp cold cava.

Indeed, the wine (and the winery that produces it) is the star of the show here, where you can opt for a basic tasting experience in the hotel’s Nou Celler 1923 bar or upgrade to a cheese masterclass (with paired wines, natch) from one of the estate’s resident sommeliers. Join a tasting tour that include visits to the winery and vineyards, or go full bells-and-whistles with the platinum experience: a guided tour of the 14th-century Peralada Castle that takes in its fine-art collection, Harry Potteresque library, stork-filled gardens, atmospheric cloisters and ancient wine vaults before winding up at the winery for a taste of some of the estate’s top – hic – wines.

On the off-chance that by, say, day three or four, you’ve run out of Alka-Seltzer and crave a few hours of self-imposed sobriety, strike out to explore the dreamlike Empordà landscapes that so inspired Salvador Dalí, then hit up the Figueres museum dedicated to his life and work. You’ll be unsurprised to learn, after laying eyes on the extraordinary egg-topped exterior of the Dalí Theatre and Museum, that this eye-popping edifice in the heart of Dalí’s hometown was designed by the man himself. Inside, the maestro’s mortal remains rest in a crypt beneath the theatre stage, alongside the largest collection of his work on the planet. Eyes peeled for surrealist masterpieces including Galatea of the Spheres, Soft Self-Portrait with Grilled Bacon, and Dalí’s legendary Mae West Lips Sofa installation.

It would be a ‘shame… shame… shame’ to miss an iconic Game of Thrones photo opportunity on the steps of Gothic Girona Cathedral while you’re in the region. Afterwards, scale the mediaeval city walls for sunset views across a sea of rust-red rooftops. Girona’s Jewish Quarter dates way back to the 12th century and is one of the best-preserved in Europe; seek out secret courtyards among its labyrinthine lanes to pause for a reviving rugelach and espresso.

Many of the Costa Brava’s famously sandy beaches can be reached within a half-hour drive of Hotel Peralada. Discover the pine-fringed movie-star looks of Rostella Cove or head for the ever-popular bays at Cap Ras. Or opt for the relative seclusion of Garbet Beach, sandwiched neatly between the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean and the coastal vineyards responsible for some of the Peralada Estate’s most celebrated wines.
