The Christopher
Grandly gabled homestead
Leafy Edgartown side street
There’s a crisp clapboard-meets-Caribbean charm to rooms at boutique Martha’s Vineyard stay the Christopher, but that’s as far the formality goes: breakfast is tapas-style and in your room if you wish; the prevalence of lounge furniture suggests staying put is more than OK – on the porch or patio or your private balcony, as you prefer, and the right to roam and pop home is a welcome happenstance of its close-to-town locale. Charter a vintage yacht, cycle the coastal trails, picnic on the beach, and sink your yearly seafood allowance: all the classic hallmarks of a New England escape are here.

Our Favourite Rooms
All rooms are sumptuously dressed in a style that blends New England’s crisp nauticalia with zingy geometric prints and pops of colour that are more typically Caribbean. King Deluxe rooms are covetable in scale, including space to lounge – opt for one with a balcony if you can’t get enough of the island’s sea air. The Lark Suite is top of house literally and figuratively with wraparound terraces and superlative views.
Packing Tips
Wayfarer shades, sailor stripes and deck shoes for off-shore adventures; crop trousers or shorts for cycling; light knits for lingering on the porch long after dessert.
Also
In front of this former captain’s house (a registered historic building), a much-Instagrammed, towering pagoda tree looms: brought in a pot from China centuries ago, it’s said to be the oldest of its kind Stateside.
Дети
Little Smiths are welcome at the Christopher (from $50 a night); book a King Deluxe or suite to accommodate an extra bed. Please note there are no specific activities or kit for children here.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For
MV’s island locale makes sea-based pursuits the obvious choice: if you’re swimming, beaches vary, so find out about undertows and wave sizes before you wade in; take a guided kayaking tour, or book onto a sailing cruise or more exclusive private charter. From Edgartown’s Memorial Wharf, Magic Carpet – a 56ft wooden yawl – sails daily, for a classic yacht experience. Two wheels are the land transport of choice on MV, with miles of trails for cyclists, including a 14-mile round trip looping Edgartown, as well as a six-mile jaunt to Oak Bluffs that’s scenic and waterside most of the way. Some of the island’s outlying beaches make for an idyllic day trip: pack a picnic and take the Chappy Ferry to East Beach, a quieter, boulder-strewn beach of Atlantic rollers and plentiful birdlife. An easy bike ride from the Christopher’s sister stay Summercamp, Joseph Sylvia state beach is where you can jump off ‘Jaws Bridge’ of the Spielberg movie fame.
