Lord Poulett Arms
The art of the country pub
Handsome Hinton Saint George
Welcoming travellers all the way since 1680, the Lord Poulett Arms in the scenic Somerset village of Hinton Saint George. The name has nothing to do with French fowl; rather, it’s a nod to the Hon Earl Poulett, and it’s actually pronounced ‘paullet’. He’s long since cleared out, anyway, handing the baton to two experts in food, flagstones and fireplaces, with cosy bedrooms to retire to after one too many Butcombe Brewery beers.

Food & Drink
Top Table
For peak cosiness, opt for one of the tables for two by the fire, or request a fair-weather table out on the terrace.
Дресс-код
Leave the sequins at home.
Hotel Restaurant
This is Great British pub grub with a quick detour around the world: expect dishes to include trout spring rolls with soy and sesame dressing and compressed cucumber; rump of Mendip lamb with boulangère potatoes and spring leeks; tonka bean crème brûlée with pistachio ice-cream. The furniture has been sourced from antique markets all over the country, the mood lighting (care of candles and table lamps) is excellent, and there’s a fuzzy chatter filling the room and making it even more inviting.
Hotel Bar
The pub and restaurant are open plan. Make time for a drink first so you can have a chat with the locals as you work your way through the craft beers on tap, most of which come from the nearby Butcombe Brewery.
Last Orders
Breakfast is served from 8am until 9.30am, after which the pub stays open until 11pm (10.30pm on Sundays).
Planes
Exeter’s airport is closest, roughly half an hour away by car. Heathrow is a three-hour drive from the hotel.
Trains
The closest rail station is Crewkerne, a 10-minute drive away. Direct trains from London Waterloo take two and a half hours with South Western (southwesternrailway.com).
Automobiles
You’ll want to get out and see some of the glorious Somerset countryside, so your own wheels will be useful. Yeovil is the closest town, a 20-minute trip by car.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
Once you’ve worked your way through the list of local ales and had a chat with a few of the friendly villagers propping up the bar, have a snoop around historic Hinton Saint George, which has a Grade I-listed church dating back to the 13th century. There are also plenty of walking paths that set off from the village, including one that passes by the 14th-century tree with the widest spread of oak branches in England. Admire some impressive Elizabethan architecture in the form of Montacute House, a 20-minute drive up the road. Or take in the dramatic Jurassic Coast and its poster town Lyme Regis, which is 40 minutes away by car. Head up to Pass Vale Farm on Burrow Hill, which has been pressing cider for 200 years and has 180 acres of orchards. The lewder-minded will enjoy a trip down to see the Cerne Giant (and its famous appendage).
