Uga Prāva offers half-board and all-inclusive rates, both of which include a range of soft and alcoholic drinks served during set hours. Rates include concierge services from a dedicated suite host.

Also

Five suites and all of the common areas are wheelchair accessible, thanks to a lift that runs from the pool level to the lower and upper suites. The beach is harder to access for those with reduced mobility, as it involves descending a set of stairs set into the cliffside.

Our Favourite Rooms

All seven suites are kitted out in soothing neutrals, with chalk-white walls, wood and rattan furnishings, and fabrics in soft coastal hues. This minimalist aesthetic heightens the vivid blues and greens outside, which are especially impressive in the Horizon Suites, which have vast, ocean-facing picture windows running the length of the room (there’s one beside the bath tub, too). For more outdoor space, plump for a Hermit Suite, each of which has a furnished terrace and a Jacuzzi.

Poolside

Uga Prāva’s 41-metre infinity pool is a showstopper. Flush with the lawns on one side and edged by a steep drop on the other, it plays with perspective to masterful effect, creating sightlines that flow from the pool’s surface to the Indian Ocean on the horizon. There’s a palm-shaded terrace on the landward side and sunloungers are arranged along its ocean-facing edge, ensuring front row seats at sunset.

Spa

There’s a small, soothingly dressed spa with two treatment rooms, one of which is for couples. It’s staffed by nimble-fingered Balinese therapists who offer an extensive menu of treatments, including massages, facials, turmeric and sandalwood body scrubs, ginger and honey body wraps, and botanical hair treatments. They make liberal use of Sri Lankan products, including locally sourced tropical herbs, coconut oil and sea salt. Private yoga and meditation classes can be arranged on request, and there’s a compact gym.

Children

All ages are welcome, but not especially catered for. The two-bedroom Coral Suites are designed for families, with one king-size bed and two singles. For an additional charge, an extra bed can be added to a Horizon Suite.

Unless it’s fiercely hot, go for a table in the open-air section. At dinner, you can ask for a private table to be set up by the pool.

Hotel Restaurant

Tangalle has a rich history of fishing communities, a local point of pride and the driving force behind the cuisine at Uga Prāva. The restaurant draws on the daily catch of local fishers and sources produce from the region’s coastal farms. Dinner menus vary, drawing on the best seasonal produce the chefs can get their hands on; you might get tuna poké bowls, spicy lagoon prawns, Sri Lankan mezze platters or mahi mahi cooked in banana leaves. The light-flooded dining room is split into two sections: an indoor, air-conditioned space encased within glass and a second open-air area where the vast windows can be thrown open to the breeze.

Hotel Bar

There’s a bar in the lounge, but you can also ask for local beers, wines, whiskies and signature cocktails to be served wherever you like. From 6pm, guests often gather by the pool for pre-dinner cocktails.

Last Orders

Breakfast is from 7am–10am; after that, the all-day dining menu is served until 10pm.

Your butler can arrange in-suite dining from 7am–10pm.

Planes

The nearest airport is Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, a three-hour drive from the hotel. For a swifter transfer, book the Sri Lankan Air Taxi, which will whisk you to nearby Dickwella in 45 minutes. From there, it’s a 25-minute drive to Uga Prāva.

Automobiles

Driving in Sri Lanka can be a bit bewildering if you’re used to smooth tarmac and a strict highway code; you’ll also need to apply for a licence in advance. Unless you’re really determined to make the drive yourself, you’re better off hiring a professional to navigate the island’s roads. There’s secure parking on the hotel grounds.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Uga Prāva’s promontory perch makes the hotel feel more remote than it is, making leisurely days on the grounds all the more special. Start with a sunrise sound healing led by a Buddhist instructor, or a private yoga session held on the hotel’s golden sands. Once the sun is fully up, pad between the beach and infinity pool, then settle on the lush lawns for pre-dinner cocktails. Beyond the hotel, there’s much to bring out your adventurous side. Nearby bays are teeming with marine life, making Tangalle a prime destination for snorkelling. The hotel can also arrange whale watching (November to April) in Mirissa, lagoon safaris aboard a catamaran, and surfing sessions at Unakuruwa Beach, known for its two pristine point breaks. For a hit of culture, trek to Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara, a Buddhist temple complex at the crest of a 205-metre-high rock formation.
