Hotel Lucine

Texan time capsule

In sight of the surf

A beach-house bolthole right on Galveston’s seafront, Hotel Lucine’s playful retro touches encourage all-day lingering. Sip classic margaritas by the courtyard pool, snap Sixties-inspired selfies against candy-colored rooftops, and fuel up on short stacks and steak frites at languid weekend brunches. And the rooftop bar, with postcard views of the Gulf, keeps the beach party spirit alive until late. Step outside, where a smorgasbord of seaside treats — nostalgic carnival rides, cotton candy and seawall roller skating — awaits.

Our Favourite Rooms

Rooms ramp up the seaside charm with sandy woods, palm-print drapes and nostalgic nods to Hotel Lucine’s previous life as the Treasure Isle Motel. Pick a Balcony room for your very own candy-colored canopy, or opt for easy access straight into the courtyard and pool from the first-floor Kings and Double Queens.

Poolside

Open between 8am and 10pm daily, the courtyard’s brightly colored pool is sun-soaked during the summer and heated to a balmy 88°F in winter, for year-round dips.

Spa

There isn’t a spa here, but in-room massages can be arranged on request.

Packing Tips

The courtyard’s so bright you gotta wear shades: bring your outsized Jackie O’s for stylish poolside snaps against a classic bleached-white beach-house backdrop, complete with colorful retro roofs in teal, turmeric and terracotta. A pocketful of quarters keeps it old-school for trips to the Pleasure Pier’s coin-pusher arcades.

Also

Yoga sessions run at Hotel Lucine several times a month, and there are other wellness events, including sound baths, pilates and guided meditation, held throughout the year.

Children

Welcome; Double Queen rooms sleep up to four and child prices apply for under-13s. There’s a kids’ menu at the Den, and the seaside attractions here will have Little Smiths squealing with delight.

Hotel Restaurant

The Fancy — as its name might suggest — is Hotel Lucine’s mischievous take on American fine dining. Wood cladding, rattan furniture, ribbed glass and wall-to-wall Gulf views lend an upscale beach-diner feel, with a menu that promises zingy ‘cowboy’ cobb salads, a (fancy) Texan wagyu burger and roasted whole catch of the day. The weekend brunch doesn’t mess about either: think smoked oyster tartine, shrimp remoulade, steak frites, and an invitation to ‘put an egg on anything’. It’s open daily for breakfast, and Wednesday through Sunday for dinner.

Over at the Den, light bites and fresh brews are served in a bright, sociable space filled with low sofas, colorful beachy art and plenty of greenery.

Hotel Bar

Bars in both the Fancy and the Den boast cocktail lists as long as your arm, with Den happy hours (all-day Monday and Tuesday to Friday, 3pm–6pm) adding to the already convivial atmosphere. Try the signature margarita (so popular they put it on tap) or a refined Hotel Lucine old fashioned. The Rooftop is where it’s at for après-surf sundowners and Gulf views, and there’s live music on weekends, too.

Last Orders

Bars stay open until 10pm (the Den is open till midnight on Friday and Saturday). The Fancy serves breakfast 8am–11am (brunch is 8am–2pm on weekends); lunch from 11am–2pm, and dinner is dished 5pm–10pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

Room Service

None, but there’s a grocery store right next door, and rooms have mini fridges for storing snacks and drinks.

Planes

Houston’s William P Hobby Airport is around a 45-minute drive from the hotel. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is around 75 minutes.

Automobiles

It’s a straight shot down I-45 to the hotel, where limited free parking is available on a first-come first-served basis. Alternatively, you can find metered public parking (payable via the PayByPhone app only) along Seawall Boulevard.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

There’s no shortage of fun to be had along Seawall Boulevard, which is 10.3 solid miles of urban park, manna for joggers, strollers, skaters and incurable people-watchers. Pause along the way for throwback thrills and carnival kicks on the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, and follow the Seawall Interpretive Trail: 70 brutalist benches brightened by hand-painted mosaic tiling that forms a pictorial history of the Texan coast.

The Galveston Seawall itself, a huge concrete wave that hugs the coastline, has become something of a magnet for mural painters and graffitos, meaning there’s always something new to ogle. Hotel Levine sits at the eastern end of the Seawall, right opposite the beach and jetty, a prime jumping off point for paddleboarding, surfing and angling

Inland, the historic San Jacinto neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and colorful architecture are made for aimless ambling. Don’t miss the palm-fringed Renaissance-style confection that is the Bryan Museum, with its fine collection of Texan art and artifacts, or the (almost comically) opulent 1892 Bishop’s Palace.
