Awol Kennebunkport

Sailor’s delight

Anchored by Dock Square

The old sea captain who once lived in what’s now quaint bed and breakfast Awol Kennebunkport would be thrilled to see the smooth-sailing way it operates. Staff are on hand to tailor itineraries to you; whether that’s navigating to the closest seafood shacks and exploring secluded coves. Deciding whether to retire to your room’s pine-shrouded patio and spacious soaking tub is the only tough decision you’ll face. Either way, it gets a hearty ‘yar’ from us.

Public beach nearby, free-to-borrow bikes and beach chairs, board games, concierge and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: smart TV, individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, minifridge, wine glasses and a corkscrew, clothes steamer, bathrobes and Lather bath products.

Our Favourite Rooms

It’s hard to decide between the 19th-century Melville Walker House — formerly home to a sea captain of the same name — or a standalone cabin if you take your seclusion seriously. The latter have private patios, adorned with fire pits and fringed by a lofty pine grove.

Packing Tips

Once your walking shoes and trouser clips are packed, be sure you’ve got a strong craving for lobster and you’ll be all set to fall fast for this East Coast expanse.

Also

If you’re in need of a wellness reset, staff can book you in for a day of pampering (mani-pedis, hot-stone massages, facials: the works) at the nearby Cottage Breeze Day Spa.

Children

Little Smiths are welcome, though rooms are limited to two and there aren’t any special facilities to keep tots entertained.

Food and Drinks

Hotel Restaurant

Breakfasts are a flavor-packed affair of fresh sourdough and stacked bagels, but for the rest of your daily dishes you’ll have to head to one of the town’s many eateries.

Hotel Bar

There’s no bar here, but all Awol’s rooms have dry bars, as well as wine glasses and a corkscrew, so bringing a bottle back from HB Provisions in town is your best bet for a right-by-bed nightcap.

Last Orders

Breakfast is laid out daily between 8am and 10am.

Planes

Domestic flights can take you straight to Portland International Jetport, or Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, both around a 30-minute drive from the hotel. If you’re arriving from outside the US, Boston Logan International Airport is a little over 90 minutes away by car. Staff can arrange private transfers for an additional charge.

Automobiles

Kennebunkport is fairly easy to explore on foot or by bike, so a set of wheels won’t be essential. If you’ve come by car, there’s free parking on-site.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Awol Kennebunkport puts you steps from Gooch’s Beach, where wave breaks draw surfers year-round. If you aren’t yet an expert on the board, Aquaholics run surfing lessons, and has kayaks and paddleboards to rent for anyone who’d rather stick to the calmer waters. Parson’s Beach is a slightly further 15-minute cycle, but worth the journey for its secluded coves and almost-empty sands. Sailboat cruises, on, say, the Schooner Eleanor take you along the Kennebunkport River and you can spy whales between May and October.

Bird-watchers will have their pick of the flocks, too, down the six-mile Bridle Path or at the Emmons Preserve, which runs along the Batson River. And Walker’s Point is a bikers’ and hikers’ haven. In town, there's plenty of antique shops and locally owned boutiques to mooch around in. Maine is big on beer, and buffs can follow the Beer Trail guide to sample some of its home brews.
