The Hideout White Bay

Out-of-sight island stay

Sun-baked BVI

The Hideout White Bay is a beguiling, seven-villa hideaway on Jost Van Dyke island’s scenic same-name beach. It’s tucked away in one of the more secluded spots in the British Virgin Islands, so the ‘hideout’ moniker is well earned here. Climb the steps to your luxury cabin-on-stilts, slide open all that gleaming glass – hello, paradisiacal panoramas – and ease yourself into your private plunge pool to take in your tropical surroundings in total peace. Although you’ve probably come for the precious downtime, the laidback beach bar and restaurant on the doorstep offers a little taste of friendly island life. Daiquiri and conch fritters on the sands? Don’t mind if we do.

Our Favourite Rooms

Guest quarters at the Hideout White Bay are uniformly charming, with rustic-luxe touches everywhere, from the earthy wood interiors to the soft linens and wow-factor pendant lighting. Each swoon-worthy villa has its own plunge pool on the deck, the only major difference being the choice of a larger kitchen and extra bedroom. The garden-view rooms certainly make the most of the island’s natural tropical assets, but if we have to pick a favourite space, it’s the two-bedroom beachfront villa with an unobstructed view of the white sand and waves – yes, it’s just as heavenly as it sounds.

Poolside

Each guest villa has its own private plunge pool and access to the public white-sand beach.

Spa

There’s no spa on site, but treatments can be booked in your villa or on the beach through a mobile spa service.

Packing Tips

Panama hat and picture-perfect pout.

Children

There’s no crèche or kids’ club, but little Smiths are welcome to join you at the Hideout. You can request cots or extra air mattresses as required.

Food and Drinks

Hotel Restaurant

Hendo's Hideout, one of the island’s most well-known restaurants, is at your service for the duration of your stay. There’s a large covered area with shaded tables and a bar, plus picnic tables and parasols on the beach itself, where you can get a closer look at the swaying palms and bobbing seacraft. Lunch is served daily from 10am and dinner is served Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm. There are local seafood specials daily, fresh sushi on Thursday evenings, live music on Fridays, and a hearty brunch washed down with bottomless mimosas served every Sunday. Dishes meld Caribbean and international flavours – try pulled-pork tacos and burgers stacked sky high for lunch, or lobster ravioli, veal shank or veggie Pad Thai for dinner.

Hotel Bar

The Hendo’s Hideout bar (open 10am to 8pm) is part of the restaurant and just as relaxed. Rock up in comfy beach casual wear, take a seat at the shaded bar and get started on a Delirious Donkey (citrus vodka, lime, ginger beer), or choose from the list of beers, wines and soft drinks.

Last Orders

Don’t hang about if you’re hungry – dinner orders close at 8pm.

Planes

There are no direct flights from the USA, Canada, Europe or South America to the British Virgin Islands’ main airport (Tortola’s Terrance B Lettsome International Airport). So, you’ll need to catch a connecting flight through another Caribbean island airport, such as Puerto Rico, St Thomas, Antigua or St. Maarten, then arrive into Terrance B Lettsome Airport. Hotel transfers from here are available and priced by group, and take about two hours in total. Depending on your itinerary, you might instead choose to arrive at Auguste George Airport on Anegada or Taddy Bay Airport on Virgin Gorda, then arrange onward transportation to Jost Van Dyke.

Automobiles

You can walk everywhere on the island, as long as you don’t mind tackling a few hills on your hikes. But if you need to get where you’re going a little quicker, you can hire a car from Paradise Jeep Rentals. There’s a car park next to the welcome centre with free 24-hour parking.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

The main draw of the Hideout White Bay is the bay itself: a long, dreamy stretch of (you guessed it) white sand sloping into turquoise waters. The beach is an ace spot for all ages to hang out, whether they’re making sand monsters, picnicking or simply sunning themselves. The aforementioned waters are ripe for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkelling and catamaran or yacht sailing. Guests also have access to the neighbouring volleyball court and family beach games. When the conditions are right, the naturally foaming Bubbly Pool is nature’s version of a Jacuzzi, and a good reward to aim for at the end of an island hike.
