Our Favourite Rooms

Cottages with either one king or two queen beds are top of the heap here, simply dressed and spaciously proportioned to let their woodland setting shine. Each has a private outdoor area with a fire pit and low-slung wooden chairs, where you can bathe in the forest light, linger with a good book or toast marshmallows over glowing embers. If you’re intent (get it?) on glamping, Fields Tents offer more creature comforts, with electric light, air-con and a heater, ensuite bathrooms and a heated mattress pad. Simple Tents — for which the bathroom set-up is bag showers in the field (requiring swimwear) — are better suited to those who like to feel off-grid.

Poolside

In a fenced area at the heart of the resort — bordering blueberry fields — an unheated pool, edged by sunloungers, provides a welcome spot for cooling dips; open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day (11am until 8pm daily).

Spa

What feels like walking into a windowless cottage turns out to be a forest-bathing delight at the resort’s beneath-the-bows massage cabin: tension-easing treatments are tailored to your tastes and soundtracked by the wind-tickled woodland and its resident birdlife through the open (but not overlooked) doors.

Packing Tips

Wood for the fire and s’mores kits are provided. Warm layers for alfresco evenings, a penchant for blueberries and sense of adventure are all you need to enjoy a few days here.

Also

Only the main dining and lounge area, the Willow, has WiFi, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing, fireside socializing and s’mores.

Children

Welcome. There’s no kids’ club or babysitting, but The Fields of Michigan’s wholesome country pursuits are well suited to families, and there are cottages with two queen beds that sleep four.

Food and Drinks

Hotel Restaurant

The Fields of Michigan Supper Club is a sociable feast where you dine together with other guests at a long, linen-topped table — either overlooking the blueberry fields or within the restaurant. Book ahead for a set menu of plates spun with estate-sourced fruits and herbs, seasonal ingredients, lake-caught fish and wine pairings. Mindy, who runs the show here, is also the chef, and as her fresh bakes served each morning as part of the Continental spread testify, Supper Club events are as flavorful as they are memorable. Breakfast is served at the Willow each morning, and a small selection of light bites and sharing platters accompanies drinks here every evening. When The Fields of Michigan Supper Club isn’t running, a choice of café-style dishes is available. Beneath the trees, the Speakeasy is a canopy-shrouded den, quaintly fronted by a porch and rocking chairs, that can be reserved for private dinners for two.

Hotel Bar

In the evening, the Willow is a sociable spot, only steps from the communal fire pit; take your drink to the lounge area (warmed by a wood-burning stove during cooler months); borrow a board game or settle in with a book.

Last Orders

Breakfast is served from 8.30am until 10am. The Supper Club runs Thursday to Saturday in the evening; on other days, you can enjoy small plates and light bites until 10pm.

Room Service

There’s a self-serve coffee station in the lounge at the Willow. And the resort’s store is stocked with candy, jerky and other bites to satisfy any cravings between meals.

Worth Getting Out of Bed For

Massage treatments, pool dips, forest bathing, fire pits and toasting s’mores are the stuff of contented downtime at The Fields of Michigan. Its blueberry fields are yours to pick and eat from, around June and July, when purple fruit jewels verdant rows of berry bushes. Beyond the resort’s boundaries, borrow a bike and pedal the scenic 40-minute route to the lake shore along the Kal Haven Trailhead. Head into South Haven; flanked by lighthouse-tipped piers and sandy beaches, this is a town with a lively centre of boating, indie stores, art galleries and cafés.
