I was hesitant to book at the Thompson Main House after reading reviews about the noise. My friend and I were looking for a hotel that was NOT an all-inclusive and somewhere we could relax in an adult atmosphere (as we both have children and wanted a REAL vacation). I requested a quiet room, thinking that we could balance out the noise with some earplugs. The room we got was actually quite as soon as we closed the patio door. No earplugs necessary. The included breakfast in the rooftop restaurant was of high quality - including coffee or tea, an all natural pressed green juice, a fresh fruit plate (and no, it wasn't just cantaloupe and honeydew - it had fresh berries, guava, pineapple and strawberries as well), toast, pastries, two eggs, and roasted potatoes with hollandaise. The prices at the restaurant and in-room dining were surprisingly reasonable - about half of what you'd pay at a Hyatt boutique hotel in the US or Canada. The rooftop pool was divine -- we were able to relax during the week. On Friday it was definitely louder with the live DJ playing music during the day. And yes, the pool closes at 7pm in the winter but it is dark by then in any case. We loved the lounge and daybeds. The service was fantastic. Maybe it was the time we went, but it wasn't a "scene" and there was plenty of space to lie out in the sun. We felt safe in the area (although when you walk down 5th avenue, be prepared to be asked if you want drugs every 20 feet or so). The hotel is right next to a mall -- H&M, Sephora, Zara, Starbucks -- the comforts of home if you're not so adventurous. There are tons of restaurants and bars and shopping right along 5th avenue - the location does not lack for choice. There is also an amazing spa (Prana Spa) across the street in the Fashion Hotel. It's not as cheap as some of the places along 5th Avenue, but it's not sketchy and you get a "real" massage. We tried a few places and this was by far the best - and incredibly convenient. The interior of the hotel is modern and quiet. Again, it may be the time of year we went (November-December), but it was very quiet. The cleaning staff were amazing and anytime we asked for anything, it was brought right away. In room dining was usually only a 25 minute wait from the time we ordered. We were thoroughly impressed. I understand that everyone has different experiences when they go on vacation and are looking for different things -- we got exactly what we wanted.
