Public transport on Zanzibar is limited. Daladalas are crowded local minibuses that operate extensively on the island. Taxis are quite affordable but guests are advised to negotiate a price before starting a trip as few vehicles have a functioning meter. Motorcycle taxis, known as boda bodas, are an inexpensive and quick way to get around the island. Guests are advised to always wear a helmet. Bicycles are a fun way to explore the island and can be easily hired. Travellers looking for greater independence can also hire cars. 4x4 vehicles are often the best choice for those wanting to travel off the beaten track. Most roads in Zanzibar are fairly well maintained and driving is relatively safe on the island.
