Keeping Hadahaa’s House Reef Special

From its inception, environmental and socially sustainable initiatives have been an integral part of our operational culture. Being in a pristine environment, the team at the resort constantly strives in cultivating the value of eco-consciousness and improving its day-to-day sustainability practices. We continue to strive that with these actions, we help to conserve our house reef.

·         The island went through an extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), reducing possible negative impacts

·         The first structures built were two jetties to get building materials on the island without having to dig channels into the reef

·         This helped preserve the reef, therefore sustaining the rich marine life – one of the highlights for guests when they visit the resort

·         Hadahaa’s reef is home to resident turtles, black tip reef sharks, barracudas, spotted eagle rays and many species of fish including the Maldivian anemone fish, parrot fish, lion fish, powder blue surgeon fish, black saddle grouper, giant calms and much more

·         Many species of sharks swim in Hadahaa’s waters, which is very important as having top predators in the house reef ensures that our ecosystem stays on balance

·         Hadahaa’s house reef is continuously watched to prevent fishing activities and has proven to be a refuge for many highly commercial species such as groupers, tunas, jacks, octopi, lobsters and even sea cucumbers

·         Hadahaa island is surrounded by a 360° reef, therefore naturally protecting our beach from erosion

·         The beach is all natural and we do not pump sand from the seabed

·         Motorized water sports are also not permitted on the island, to protect and sustain the pristine waters, corals and marine life

·         Blue Journeys, the resort’s Dive and Activity Center, organizes complimentary weekly Go Deeper talks for guests, sharing different topics about the house reef, formation of the atolls and islands, and more

·         Prior to any snorkeling or diving activity, guests are briefed by Blue Journeys on the do’s and don’ts when in the water as well as the proper way to swim so that corals are not damaged by fins

·         Guests are also advised not to touch or collect any coral and marine life. Feeding of fish on the house reef is also not permitted in order to maintain the natural behavior of the fishes

·         Bi-weekly house reef cleanup and removal of threating species for the coral reef, such as the corallivorous Crown of Thorns sea star and the Drupella sea snail

·         Whenever possible, it is shared with guests that common sun blocks normally contain Oxybenzone or Octinoxate, toxic chemicals that bleach corals and reduce their growth. Alternatives to harmful sun blocks are UV protection clothes such as rash guards or sunscreens that have physical UV filters, like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide

·         Coral reef monitoring following the Australian program, Coral Watch, is done on a monthly basis

Environmental & Social Sustainability Policy

“We acknowledge our presence in this atoll impacts the fragile ecosystem and endeavour to minimise our footprint through a commitment to protect both the environment and local communities via education through environmentally conscious actions and positive knowledge sharing.”

ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

From its inception, environmental and socially sustainable initiatives have been an integral part of Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa’s operational culture. This vastly unexplored area is home to stunning coral reefs, indigenous fish species, and remote islands where the traditional Maldivian way of life centred on the sea and its resources. The resort is a 50 villa accommodation located in North Huvadhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll. The resort includes two swimming pools, 24 plunge pools, gym facilities, spa, dive and activity centre, two restaurants and a bar. We acknowledge that a 50 villa island resort with its accompanying infrastructure in the midst of an extremely isolated and pristine tropical atoll poses a risk to the surrounding area and its people. This has empowered us to dedicate our resources to protect this unique and fragile environment. Being environmentally conscious is critical not only in this atoll but also in the Maldives as a whole, since rising water levels would have potentially devastating effects on this country first and foremost.

Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa has collaborated with EarthCheck to monitor our performance in accordance with a stringent internationally recognised approach. We strive to surpass Best Practice benchmarking levels and continually improve upon the existing environmental and social sustainability performance within the confines and parameters of a remote location such as ours.  As the first resort in the Maldives to commit to the EarthCheck principles throughout the design, construction and operational stages our commitment has been unwavering. It was this commitment that allowed us to achieve the prestigious EarthCheck “Building Planning and Design standard” certified status in August 2008. We continued improving our sustainability efforts throughout the years and was then awarded the Silver certification followed by the Gold certification by EarthCheck.

In 2017, we were audited by Green Globe and was also certified Gold for our practices. To ensure we monitor our efforts and strive for improvement, we have appointed our Resident Marine Biologist as the Green Globe Coordinator, who is responsible for identifying environmental risks, recording and monitoring our performance through benchmarking, whilst driving the environmental and social initiatives undertaken by the resort.

The unspoilt and remote location of the resort necessitates a symbiotic relationship with the local islands and their communities. Special consideration is given to employing and empowering local residents and wherever possible, sourcing local and fair trade products and services. With this in mind, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa has formed a committee of elected ‘Hyatt Thrive Ambassadors’ to represent the different communities. Through better connectivity, shared knowledge, development of business skills, and encouragement and participation from both sides, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa leads mutually beneficial programmes that inspires sustainable development projects, allows the resort to gather supplies and recruits from nearby islands, and ensures the local communities develop and prosper. Hyatt Thrive utilizes the knowledge and abilities of employees as well as the wider communities, in order to give everyone a means, as well as the education, to act on their concerns.

In addition to this, we ensure that the resort and the management comply with the national legislation, laws and regulations, and that we do not infringe on local customs and cultural practices. We strive to benefit the local community through shared knowledge and joint endeavours.

We are honoured to be recognized and certified by Green Globe and EarthCheck, and are proud of our commitment to sustainable tourism. Therefore we encourage all our employees, guests and all our stakeholders to support our efforts to continue in caring for the environment and respecting our local communities through active engagement.

Back To Back Improvements At Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa

Since mid-2017, the multi-award winning resort, the latest being Maldives’ Leading Resort 2018 in the annual World Travel Awards, had committed a large proportion of resources to launch several upgrading projects to meet with the evolving preferences of travelers. With the introduction of the Deluxe Park Pool Villas at 265 sq m and 2-Bedroom Park Pool Villas at 300 sq m in October 2017, the resort is better furnished to provide extra comfortable spaces for families and couples to enjoy. Both villas include a 55 sq m pool with a spacious cabana, perfect for spending the evening outdoors, enhancing guests’ unique Maldivian stay experience.

This year, the resort continued the upgrading of facilities with additional features for the water villa category. The refreshed Park Sunset Ocean Pool Villa offers a private freshwater plunge pool with cabana that overlooks the vast Indian Ocean. Guests are now able to enjoy the best of both water features, while basking under the Maldivian sun.

With the resort’s perseverance in extending consistent authentic hospitality, embracing of guests’ feedback and endeavors in sustainability efforts, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa is also delighted to share that during the annual World Travel Awards, the resort was accorded Maldives’ Leading Resort 2018.

Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa is a barefoot luxury resort, located in one of the largest and deepest natural atolls in the world, providing guests a secluded resort experience. Situated on a private island just 55km north of the equator, Hadahaa’s unique location, blesses its guests with a pure Maldivian experience. The resort is truly striking with its fluffy white beach and pristine waters housing a 360° house reef. The careful and seamless integration of environment, culture and modern design has earned the resort a certification for both design and construction by EarthCheck and a Gold Certification by Green Globe for its sustainability efforts.

Featuring a total of 50 villas, the minimalist-styled accommodations are nestled within the island’s tropical foliage or elevated above the water.  All villas feature floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that lead out to a private deck, some fitted with a personal plunge pool, and are mere steps from the beach and crystal blue lagoon.
