Car Hire

Bringing your own car into Kyrgyz Republic is not recommended because of problems obtaining fuel in some areas. The concierge can help with arranging self-drive or chauffeur-driven cars.

Fuel

Petrol (gasoline) is at a premium in Kyrgyz Republic. There are no limits on how much fuel can be purchased, but you may find that some stations run out of supplies. For adventurous journeys into the interior, fuel can sometimes be purchased from roadside vendors selling diluted fuel in plastic bottles or even from tanker trucks. This black market in fuel is open to bargaining but be careful of the quality. Lead-free fuel is available.

Permits for Driving into China

For visitors wishing to cross into China by road, permits are sometimes issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyz Republic to allow drivers of chauffeur-driven cars across the border as far as the main Chinese customs station. The permit is no guarantee that the Chinese authorities will allow this, but it does help. Kyrgyz Republic drivers issued with the permit usually have experience with the Torugart Pass. Permits are not issued to foreign drivers.
