Cologne Classics - Must see
Cologne Cathedral is located in the Old Town and is one of the most famous attractions in the city. With a height of 157.38 m (516.33 ft), it is the second highest church building in Europe and the third highest in the world. The cathedral is located about 250 m (820 ft) from the Rhine, next to the former Roman city border. Since 1996, Cologne Cathedral has been part of the World Heritage list and is one of Germany’s most popular attractions.
Cologne’s Old Town
The oldest and probably most popular tourist hotspot in Cologne is the historic Old Town, where a multitude of small streets and colourful old houses were rebuilt carefully after the Second World War.
In the Footsteps of the Romans
Cologne is a stronghold of Romanesque church architecture. All 12 Romanesque churches are older than Cologne Cathedral, which was built in 1248. Their distinguishing characteristics are the typical Roman arches and the thick, fortress-like walls. The Claudius thermal spring in Cologne’s Rhine Park is one of the most beautiful spas in Europe. With its attractive architecture, a reference to the bathing culture of the Romans, the spa blends harmoniously with the beautiful parkland. At the Roman-Germanic Museum you can marvel at, among other things, Roman mosaics featuring scenes from the world of Dionysus (around 220 / 230 AD) and the reconstructed tomb of the legionary Poblicius (around 40 AD).
The Ludwig Museum is home to art from the 20th and 21st centuries. It is located just southeast of Cologne Cathedral and the main train station. In addition to its collection of modern art, it offers the Agfa-Photo-Historama (a collection of historical photography), as well as an outstanding art museum and library.
