With an irregular butterfly-like shape and a total coastline of 5.7 km (3.5 mi), the island of Wuzhizhou is blessed with a temperate climate that is pleasant all year round. It is an ideal place for vacationing, swimming and entertainment. There are more than 2,700 plant varieties on the island, including tall trees and dense bushes. The eastern and southern parts of the island are hilly, with two hills connecting to form a peak about 80m (262 ft) high. In the west and north, the terrain is level, with soft white sand stretching as far as the eye can see along crystal-clear blue waters where protected coral reefs are rich with conchs, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and a variety of tropical fish. This area is ideal for diving and discovering Sanya's diverse marine life.

In Chinese, tianya haijiao means "the furthermost part of the sky and the sea", suggesting an unattainable place. The Tianya Haijiao scenic area sits on Maling Mountain facing the sea. Walking along the nearby seashore, visitors will see a stone carved with four characters — Nan Tian Yi Zhu — that mean "a pillar standing in the southern part of the sky". Walking another 500 m (1,600 ft) will reveal a stone carved with the characters Tianya and another carved with the characters Haijiao, symbolizing endless love.

Built in 1965, the Nanwan Monkey Island nature reserve is only a 30-minute drive from Haitang Bay. Because of its wild environment, variety of plants and fruits, and numerous grottos, the area is regarded as the perfect habitat for monkeys. Riding the above-water aerial tram, which is 2,138 m (7,014 ft) long and travels at 6 m (19.7 ft) per second, visitors will delight in the surroundings — fishing rafts along the shore, thick chains of hills, the primal calls of monkeys — that make this renowned reserve the ideal setting for exploration.

Nestled at the foot of Nanshan Mountain and featuring spectacular ocean views, Nanshan Temple was built in 1988 to commemorate 2,000 years of Buddhism in China. The temple spans 40,000 sq m (430,556 sq ft) and features replicas of Tang dynasty architecture; Buddhist shrines; and a 108 m (354 ft) tall, three-sided Guan Yin Buddha statue, one of Sanya's renowned sights.

The three-story Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex (CDF) provides 70,000 sq m (753,474 sq ft) of duty-free and duty-paid shopping, restaurants, entertainment venues and cultural facilities. It has an aesthetic design inspired by the Haitang flower, the symbol of Sanya. The mall is situated in the center of the Haitang Bay resort area, within walking distance of Grand Hyatt Sanya Haitang Bay.
