People's Square

This large public square is just off Nanjing Road in the Huangpu District of Shanghai. The site of Shanghai's municipal government building, it serves as the standard reference point for measurement of distance in the Shanghai municipality. Prior to 1949, it was a part of the horseracing course in Shanghai. After gambling and horseracing were banned, a part of the racecourse became the People's Square and then major changes were made in the 1990s to create what we see today.
